Today MTV revealed the stunning opening title sequence for its new show The Shannara Chronicles.
Good news everyone! In case you haven’t gotten the memo, the art of opening title sequences is alive and well again! After a short hiatus and the onslaught of opening title cards (thanks Lost), the under appreciated title sequence is back.
Used almost as a little prequel to the show itself, The Shannara Chronicles is taking full advantage of this valuable show starter. In their opening title you can watch the earth as we know it slowly fall away, with humans bleeding into gnomes, bleeding into dwarves, bleeding into trolls — fully expressing that this is a magical world where people are no longer the dominating force.

On top of that, stylistically the video has almost a Marvel Netflix vibe to it. An incredible compliment, to be frank. Daredevil’s opening sequence has had renowned praise across the board, and its sister show, Jessica Jones, has held its own in the department as well.

Bright, colorful, and captivating, the sequence flows together almost as if it’s a moving graphic; drawing the audience in. It also helps that the music behind the imagery is catchy enough that it makes you want to go in search of the song as soon as it strikes the ear. An important element for a show on the MTV network.
To save you the trouble of googling, the song featured in the opening is called “Until We Go Down” from Ruelle. You can buy it on iTunes now or listen to it in full below.
For more details on where Ruelle got her inspiration for the song, check out MTV’s short interview with the artist here. The Shannara Chronicles will premiere with a special two-hour episode January 5, 2016 at 10 p.m. on MTV.
