In a recent interview, Spectre actor Daniel Craig revealed that if he was to do another Bond movie, he would only be doing it for the money.
When Craig was asked by Time Out London about doing another Bond film, the actor said, “Now? I’d rather break this glass and slash my wrists. No, not at the moment. Not at all. That’s fine. I’m over it at the moment. We’re done. All I want to do is move on.”
It’s possible he may be getting tired of answering the same questions for his upcoming film, Spectre, as it’s understandable for an actor going through a strenuous promotional tour to begin coming up with new responses concerning his future as Bond.
But, how serious is Craig in terms of not doing another James Bond film?
When he followed up with a bit more information regarding his lack of enthusiasm to do another Bond film, he said, “I haven’t given it any thought. For at least a year or two, I just don’t want to think about it. I don’t know what the next step is. I’ve no idea. Not because I’m trying to be cagey. Who the fuck knows?”
He continued, saying, “At the moment, we’ve done it [Spectre]. I’m not in discussion with anybody about anything. If I did another Bond movie, it would only be for the money.” This is when it starts to get interesting (and honest).
As with many actors who get stuck in franchise films, it seems Craig is feeling like he wants to move on, but the money is too good not to stick around for another. It’s actually refreshing to hear an actor of Daniel Craig’s caliber saying something like this, even if it’s most likely said in jest.
He’s been an amazing James Bond, and Spectre looks like it may be one of his best Bond films yet, but we’d love to see him doing some other films. He was incredible in The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, and the sequel has been tossed around lately, so we’d love to see him reprise his role with Rooney Mara.
Craig also said that his “Bond well is dry,” as they put every idea he had into the upcoming film and then said, “What would I do with another Bond movie? I haven’t a clue. Go into space? Let’s do it! They already did it. Let’s do it again.” He may have just been having a rough day, but some honesty is certainly coming out of these responses.
As for being contracted to do another, he said, “Well, I was contracted to do another one. That was all set up. But at the studio there was a real keenness to get it done as soon as possible. In fact, there was a conversation at one point that went: ‘Let’s film two movies back to back.’ I just went: ‘You’re out of your fucking minds.’ In the nicest possible way. They’re just too big.”
When asked who he thought should take on the role next, he seemed to care even less, saying, “Look, I don’t give a fuck. Good luck to them! All I care about is that if I stop doing these things we’ve left it in a good place and people pick it up and make it better. Make it better, that’s all.”
So, we guess we know where he stands on what the studio can do with Bond next.
It doesn’t seem like he wants to do another film, and if he does it seems like it would be because they offer him a Robert Downey Jr.-sized paycheck, which is possible considering Skyfall passed $1 billion worldwide.
As for who should play the next Bond, we would have loved for Idris Elba to take on the role, but as we found out by James Bond’s author, Anthony Horowitz, “He’s too street.” There’s enough controversy around the future of James Bond to fill an ocean, but we can’t wait to see Spectre.
