Doctor Who and Harry Potter at first glance may seem to have relatively little in common, but when you dig a little deeper, there are a creepy number of coincidences.
In the past we’ve discovered interesting similarities between Downton Abbey and Games of Thrones. There was also that time we thought Harry Potter and Sherlock were the same story. Well, now we have reconsidered, and we’ve decided that a certain boy wizard and a near 1,000-year-old Time Lord are more or less facing the very same issues. For whatever reason, all their magic and time traveling experience doesn’t help them avoid problems.
1. The bathroom blues
You would think that the one place you could go for a little privacy would be the bathroom. Think again, my friends, think again. It’s a wonder neither the Doctor nor Harry is suffering permanent constipation, or causing all their acquaintances to stand downwind due to their fear of bathing.
2. Weapon of choice
Is it a mere coincidence that both the Doctor and Harry arm themselves with something that, admonitions of Mad-Eye Moody aside, can slip into their back pocket? Those little sticks pack a big wallop. They are both highly protective of their own devices. Call it Freudian, but everyone always thinks theirs is bigger and better.
3. Play that funky music
The words “Harry and the Doctor” are in no danger whatsoever of being followed by dancer extraordinaire. It’s just really an accident waiting to happen for both of them. In fact, it’s a wonder no one has lost an eye or worse when they are on the dance floor.
4. Never plan for dinner
For whatever reason, sitting down to a meal, or having a drink with friends, is a patently bad idea. Friends don’t let other friends take risks at dinner. At the very least it leads to indigestion. Harry and the Doctor are really just better eating alone. Catch up after the meal.
5. Flying
Flying. There is nothing else like it. Simply put the Doctor and Harry just love their flying machines, and they excel at operating them… most of the time. The TARDIS and the broom may get beaten up, or have the odd piloting quirk, but they love their respective modes of transportation even if they are a tad unpredictable at times. Just because the ride may be a bit bumpy, it doesn’t mean they want to give up their preferred mode of travel.
6. True friendship
It’s not all bleak. One thing is for sure: No matter what Harry Potter and the Doctor have to face, their friends will always have their backs. Both of them inspire the loyalty and dedication of their friends. Their friends would give up everything if Harry or the Doctor needed them, including their own lives.
So in case you’re wondering how to spend your weekend, why not tackle a marathon of Harry Potter and Doctor Who? It’s hard to go wrong with either choice.
Doctor Who season 9 debuts this Saturday at 9:00 p.m. on BBC America.
