In this together
Atop the cliff, Ethan walks through the woods. When he hears movement, he starts shooting. He misses and is slashed by something with sharp claws.
Back in town, Ben and Amy walk back to the Burke house. He agrees to walk with her to school, and she kisses him goodnight. Inside, Ben finds Theresa in the kitchen; she says Ethan’s working late and promises they’ll leave soon.
The next morning, Ben tells Theresa about walking to school. Theresa warns him to be careful about knowing who their real friends are, which Ben takes personally. At school, he’s greeted by a lot of other students. He’s uncomfortable because he’s not used to that. Amy says they’re “all in this together.” Ben is summoned for orientation before the discussion can continue.
Meanwhile, Theresa heads to the realty office. She meets “Big” Bill, and he’s a bit sleazy. They are the only two realtors in town. Theresa tries to ask some questions, but Bill cuts her off by giving her a new client folder; he was in an accident, and she’s supposed to give him a house.
Orientation
At orientation, Ben meets two other students, Carrie and Reed. Ben’s seat is labeled 1-11, and the other two have their own numerical labels. Megan Fisher arrives with a projector and sets up a screen. She says that if they make it through today, they will join the first generation of Wayward Pines. Only those who are “truly ready for the truth” are welcome.
Meanwhile, Ethan runs across some ruins in the woods, which correspond to a church on his map.
Theresa finds her client, Wayne, at the hospital. When he tries to send her away, Theresa confides that she was also in an accident. He says they did something to him, and Pam was there. Theresa, in a whisper, warns him that the town is not safe. Pam interrupts with a warning about being a “freethinker.” Recognizing the threat, Theresa invites Wayne to his house.
Aberrations
Megan shows the three students pictures of a creature. They’re called “Abbies,” short for Aberrations, and are “the result of a series of genetic mutations,” Megan explains. They evolved in harsh conditions and have become the single-most efficient carnivores on the planet with their talons and heightened hearing and smell. They are also herd creatures.
“They became this,” Megan says. Their DNA is only 0.5% different from that of humans.
Meanwhile, Ethan runs through the woods, the sounds of the Abbies echoing around him. He and uses a dead deer to hide his scent. He watches the Abbies devour it. Once they leave on the trail of something else, Ethan moves on. He eventually comes across a moss-covered mile marker for Boise so continues on. He eventually gets out of the woods.
In the school cafeteria, Amy joins the three new kids. Ben is struggling with the logic of what he’s been told, but Amy assures him that everything will make sense soon.
The truth
After lunch, Megan gives each of the three kids a coin. The coin is incredibly old, but when Ben scrapes the dirt off, it turns out to be a quarter, dated 2095. The facts: They’re in Wayward Pines, and the last thing all three kids remember is some kind of accident then waking up in the hospital.
Their accidents, it turns out, weren’t accidents at all; they were chosen to be in Wayward Pines. She explains that the quarters are the last known relics of human civilization, which died out nearly 2,000 years earlier.
The bombshell: The year is not 2014 but 4028.
According to Megan, after their accidents, they were all placed into hibernation chambers. When they awoke, they became part of the first generation of Wayward Pines. She says they were chosen “to assure the survival of the human race.”
A scientist, David Pilcher, foresaw the coming change and wanted to preserve the human race, which makes Wayward Pines a sort of ark. Pilcher, she says, is always watching. He’ll never allow anything to happen to them.
‘The world you know is gone’
Theresa brings Wayne to his house. In the laundry room, she starts the dryer to drown out their voices. Wayne says he woke up after the accident and remembers a small window and people looking in at him, including Pam, as well as seeing other chambers filled with people. Theresa promises to work to figure out what’s going on. She asks Wayne to take the house with a smile, and he accepts the keys.
Meanwhile, Ethan gets out of the overgrown nature and is shocked to see everything long dead. A helicopter lands in front of him, and Jenkins comes out. He introduces himself as David Pilcher. He wants Ethan to return to Wayward Pines with him, and Ethan demands answers.
“The world you know is gone,” Jenkins/Pilcher replies. He wants Ethan to help him change things for the better.
In orientation, Megan warns the kids against telling any adults, including their parents, the truth. A student once told his parents, and the parents killed themselves and the student because it was too much. The ark will only survive if everyone follows the rules, and it’s up to the students to steer it.
Initiation
At the realtor’s office, Theresa’s snooping is interrupted when Bill gives her another client file. He says they have a steady flow of new residents, someone always appearing when needed. Bill advises Theresa to not think too hard about it.
The truth revealed, the trio of new students are initiated into the first generation of Wayward Pines.
Meanwhile, Jenkins/Pilcher promises to reveal the truth to Ethan. However, they have to run when Abbies appear. They get back in the helicopter, where Pam is waiting, and lift off just in time.
