The whole geeky gang tried to make major decisions, but some serious surprises got in the way on The Big Bang Theory season 8 finale.
Commitment issues
Amy and Sheldon kiss (!!!) for their fifth anniversary, but Amy gets mad when all Sheldon can think about is The Flash. He has commitment issues with TV shows… and, you know, a few other things.
Penny is forced to explain to Sheldon what he did wrong when Amy stops calling and texting him.
“I’m confused,” he says. “Amy should have figured out she’s wrong by now.”
Penny defends Amy, saying that Sheldon is taking the relationship too slowly. He counters by pointing out that Penny and Leonard have been engaged for a year, with no wedding date in sight.
They defend their decision, but Sheldon has clearly hit a nerve; even after making rapid-fire decisions about the wedding itself, Leonard and Penny haven’t set a date. They insist they are committed to each other, and that the ceremony won’t change anything.
But after a remark from Sheldon about the ravages of old age, Penny smiles. “I’m free tonight,” she tells Leonard. “Vegas isn’t that far away.”
“I’m in. Let’s do it!” Leonard says. Sheldon is even happy enough for them to let them stay in his spot for 30 seconds.
Breakup breakdown
Raj admits to Bernadette and Howard that his girlfriend Emily might be too weird for him; her latest “quirk” is a desire to have sex with him in a graveyard.
Raj considers breaking up with her, but Howard and Bernadette don’t think he can do it. Raj points out that they still haven’t evicted Stuart from Mrs. Wolowitz’s house, and they decide to tell Stuart he has to go.
Emily and Raj set up camp in a graveyard and begin to make out. Raj stops her, and Emily suspects he wants to break up. True to Bernadette and Howard’s prediction, Raj can’t deal with Emily’s anger and tells her he loves her.
Meanwhile, Howard and Bernadette sit down for their chat with Stuart. Roadblocks immediately erupt in front of them; Stuart has bought groceries, he tells them they’re wonderful, oh, and it’s his birthday.
Operation Kick Out Stuart is a spectacular bust.
One last thing
Penny and Leonard drive to Vegas, but the excitement drains away as Penny recounts their long relationship. “No surprises and no regrets,” she exclaims — but Leonard confesses one regret. He kissed another female scientist on his research trip to the North Sea — but insists it went no further.
Penny is concerned that he wants to sabotage their elopement with this confession, but Leonard insists he wants no secrets between them. Penny isn’t happy, but decides she can get past the brief betrayal. The two continue on to Las Vegas.
We all fall down
Sheldon calls Amy on Skype, and says he’s been thinking a lot about relationships. Amy says that she has too, and sadly tells Sheldon that she wants to take a break.
“I need some time to take a step back and re-evaluate our situation,” she says. Dazed, Sheldon agrees, and they say goodbye. Sheldon turns to the figure of Gollum on his desk.
“You’re an expert on rings,” he says, pulling out a small jewel box from his drawer; sure enough, it holds a small engagement ring. “What do I do with this one?”
Gollum has no answer.
