The magical healing powers of tea are not at work in our recap of tonight’s Girls season 4, episode 5, “Sit-In.”
Hannah received a burn in more way than one on tonight’s Girls season 4, episode 5. After returning from Iowa two years too early, a flower now stands between a man and a woman. Mimi Rose Howard tiptoes around the Hannah land mine and excuses herself. Adam’s explanations are not exactly any better than fresh pressed juice or tea in helping Hannah process the news. Technically, he did not break any rules since there were no rules to be broken. But, as Hannah says, what about the basic rule of human decency.
But Hannah wants nothing to do with Adam, Mimi Rose, or the new fruit plates in the apartment. Instead she locks herself in her bedroom and Adam calls in the cavalry.
First up, Shoshanna arrives already offended that she was the last to know about Adam’s new girlfriend. She suspects that the best first move should be to Google the bitch. That crashes and burns the instant Mimi’s bio loads on screen. Hannah begins to mobilize and discovers that behind an odd tapestry is yet another thing that she and Adam could not achieve, major home renovations. There is now not only a new girlfriend haunting the outside of the door, but a master suite trapping her inside.
“I told you about Mimi Rose, right?” Next up, Jessa does nearly nothing to ease Hannah into the situation. Prior to her departure to Idaho, Iowa, somewhere out there, Jessa and Hannah were not on the best terms. And it seems their reunion sets them even further back after Jessa admits to setting Mimi and Adam up in the first place.
Adam understands that Hannah is a tough egg to crack and flees the premises leaving Caroline and Laird to care for her in his absence. Unfortunately for Hannah, they were more interested in each other and their unborn child. The next morning’s guest sitter is not any better as Ray’s troubles with the corner supersede anything Hannah has to say. He does dust off some old scout tricks to duct tape a glove to her burnt hand.
Marni finally emerges from her Desi induced seclusion to attend to Hannah’s needs. Of course nothing could be Marni drama free as she declares that Desi moved in prior to coaxing Hannah out of hiding from the bathroom. But it turns out her selfishness is merely a diversion from saying what she has to say. It’s time to let Adam go. If it drags on she will end up hating him, he will hate her, and most of all she will hate herself.
The drawn out relationship between the two has gone on long enough. There have been multiple signs that the relationship has run its course, but Hannah operates with blinders on if it means getting what she wants. It takes Marnie’s initial turn of Hannah’s head in the direct line of Adam for her to figure out that now is the time to move forward.
Hannah emerges from her cocoon of emotional processing, not quite a butterfly ready to soar, but well enough to hear Adam out like an adult. Not yet ready to spread its wings. You and me, fine I’ll take it. My own studio, I’m not proud of my behavior yesterday. Her expectations were not met in Iowa, nor were they met in New York. But her move did give Adam what he always wanted from a relationship. Relief.
Suitcase in hand, Hannah leaves Adam and their relationship.
