Whether you are saving lives in an operating room or on a covert operation, fighting the good fight is enough to get a spot in this week’s Hypable Honors.
ABC is truly knocking it out of the park this year, as both of this week’s nominees hail from ABC dramas. Secret agents and surgeons might not have a lot in common, but when the actors bringing them to the screen knock it out of the park, it’s easy to start making comparisons.
Both of this week’s honorees showed startling vulnerability in some pretty tough circumstances. Their characters’ vulnerability gave each of them an opportunity to shine, and it would have been a shame to let either one go unnoticed.
Without further ado, here are this week’s selections for Hypable Honors. Make sure to let us know who you think had the best performances of the week in the comments below!
Hypable Honors
Show: ‘Agent Carter’
Actor: Chad Michael Murray
Agent Carter has been knocking it out of the park week after week as Peggy does her best to fit in with the SSR during the day, and tries to clear Howard Stark’s name by night. This past week showed that a character we all thought we knew might not be so clear cut.
Chad Michael Murray plays Frank Thompson, who, up until this past Tuesday’s episode, has come off as nothing more than the typical man of the mid-40s with his narrow world view and misogynistic comments, showed us what was going on behind the veneer. Frank Thompson is more than just an SSR agent looking to take down Howard Stark. He’s a soldier with some truly awful scenes bouncing around his head.
After an intense standoff scene in which Thompson freezes up in terror, Frank and Peggy have a chat while flying back to the States, and we get our first glimpse at what is churning behind Frank’s cocky mask. Chad Michael Murray managed to convince this viewer that not only does Thompson hate himself for the horrors of his past, but playing the overconfident secret agent man is just a disguise he uses to keep from feeling weak.
We are anxious to see if Thompson continues on this road to redemption, as he began to treat Peggy as more than just the office secretary this week. It’s early enough that we could really grow to like him if this vulnerable moment can bond him and Peggy together. And we could definitely use less of the “take my lunch order” comments.
Show: ‘Grey’s Anatomy’
Actor: Sarah Drew
April Kepner has morphed from an awkward, notebook carrying Intern to a confident and capable Attending in the six seasons she has been roaming the halls of Grey Sloan Memorial hospital, but her latest role as mom-to-be has given her the most heartbreaking material yet.
April is dealing with a situation no one could have predicted, and no one expects to be easy. In this week’s episode, while she and Jackson were waiting for some life-altering test results regarding the health of their unborn child, Sarah reminded us of just how strong April can be, when she’s not surrounded by alpha characters.
Watching Kepner unleash the anger, frustration, and terror that has been welling up within her since the horrible diagnosis was first uncovered reminded us that not only has Sarah Drew built a character that can be equal parts ruled by her emotions and level headed woman of medicine, but she can be both at the same time. Her faith and her medical knowledge are warring within April, causing her to lash out at both her mother and Jackson, both of which think there is only one answer to this problem.
Next week’s episode is bound to be a hard one as Jackson and April take further steps down the road to making a decision about what to do for their child. As hard as the storyline is to watch, we can’t help but be awed by the amazing performances that Sarah Drew and Jesse Williams are delivering week after week.
