New reports suggest that Joaquin Phoenix has dropped out of talks to star in Marvel’s Doctor Strange.
Deadline reports that Oscar nominee Joaquin Phoenix is no longer in talks to star as Doctor Strange in Marvel’s new film. Despite the fact that Phoenix had been reportedly in “final negotiations” to star in the film, it looks like he’s no longer in negotiations.
Doctor Strange is a neurosurgeon who serves as the Sorcerer Supreme protecting Earth against any threats via his incredibly magical powers and martial arts.
Phoenix certainly felt like he would do a fine job playing a neurosurgeon with incredible intelligence and magical abilities. He pulled off one of 2013’s best roles in Her, which earned him a Golden Globe nomination.
Phoenix was at the top of a very short list and we wouldn’t have been surprised to find out that his involvement would be announced by Marvel in the coming weeks, but it looks like the latest rumors point towards Ethan Hawke starring in Doctor Strange.
It’s disappointing to find out that Phoenix is no longer in negotiations with Marvel, but we never officially heard from either side that he was even contention for the role. He would have been a unique fit to join Marvel’s cinematic universe and Doctor Strange will require an actor of his caliber to help warm audiences up to the character.
Actor Ethan Hawke is the next actor who has been rumored to join Doctor Strange in the starring role, but those rumors are even less likely than Phoenix nabbing the role.
In the end, Phoenix may have just not been interested in signing on for half a dozen films with Marvel and joining what is a billion dollar movie making machine. We hope Marvel finds its Doctor Strange soon, as we know the studio is hoping to release this film within the next two years.
Let us know what you think about Joaquin Phoenix dropping out of talks and if you think Ethan Hawke would be a solid replacement to star in Doctor Strange.
