Leonard Nimoy’s appearances in the new Star Trek films have tied them to the original Star Trek continuity in an interesting way, and it now appears that William Shatner may also aid in that connection.
How would a new movie titled Star Trek explain having the original characters return while being played by different actors? J.J. Abrams and screenwriters Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman decided that for fans to accept this, they would have to send the young crew into an alternate timeline.
The results of the alternate timeline have been pretty successful, though many fans will argue that the way the alternate timeline was used to play off past Star Trek events in Star Trek Into Darkness was dubious at best.
Part of the reason that fans have embraced the alternate timeline is that it has allowed Leonard Nimoy to return as an older version of Spock from the original series and films. His return was used to better effect in Star Trek than in Star Trek Into Darkness, but really it’s just great to see him in the role regardless of how it has been used.
Even since the 2009 Star Trek, there has been question of whether or not we would ever see William Shatner return to reprise his role as Captain Kirk too. It now appears that the answer to that question may be yes.
Badass Digest is reporting that they’ve heard that Star Trek 3 contains a scene that not only features Shatner as Kirk once again, but it features Shatner and Nimoy on screen together, something that would be huge for the movie and the Star Trek fandom on the whole. They haven’t officially appeared together as Kirk and Spock since Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country in 1991, and this would likely be one final hurrah for the duo.
The report contains question that Shatner will agree to the cameo, but we’re guessing that he will. The actor has somewhat of a reputation for doing just about anything for a paycheck, and he’d certainly be wise to take a role that will have fans loving him again.
The one question we have is this: how exactly will this cameo work? Without spoiling the 1994 movie, the events of Star Trek: Generations would make it near impossible for Kirk Prime to return the way Spock Prime did. Will Shatner play an older version of Chris Pine’s Kirk? If so, how would Shatner and Nimoy appear on screen together? We have many questions, and it doesn’t look like they’ll be answered any time soon.
