IKEA is attracting attention with a new commercial, which hilariously describes their new catalogue as if it were an iPhone 6.
The iconic Swedish furniture megastore IKEA is known for their off-beat marketing strategies. But they may have outdone themselves with this new commercial for their 2015 catalogue:
In the commercial, a “Chief Design Güru” (whatever that’s supposed to be) is talking up the new catalogue, and all its amazing features – and we can’t help but be impressed!
In a world full of smartphones, tablets, notebooks, eBooks and your assorted MacBook products, it’s refreshing to get something like this: a “BookBook.” As the outrageously Swedish Jörgen Eghammer explains, this wondrous device needs no cables, comes fully charged and with pre-loaded content, and offers both back and forth scrolling!
The BookBook even has voice activated password protection. When someone attempts to take it from you, you say, “Excuse me, that’s mine.” Oh Scandinavians, aren’t they just so polite?
You get this miracle product free of charge, in your actual real-life letterbox. And if you want to share what you find? “You literally… share it,” Jörgen enthuses. Wait, you can still do that without social media buttons?
While the IKEA ad obviously spoofs all smartphone and tablet features, it looks like it is specifically targeting the upcoming iPhone 6, and all of its rumoured features.
This IKEA commercial definitely brightened up our day, and reminded us that sometimes it’s nice to step away from technology. We might even load ourselves down to a local IKEA store and get our hands on some furniture parts we can assemble. It’s like Lego for grownups, right?
What do you think about IKEA’s newest advertising strategy?
Note: IKEA does, ironically, have an iPhone app that allows you to view their catalogue on your phone. But is that really better than a BookBook? We think not!
