Access to 600,000 books on Amazon for $9.99 per month. It’s like Netflix, but for reading.
Amazon announced this morning Kindle Unlimited, a new monthly service that will draw comparisons to unlimited streaming sites for movies and television like Netflix.
By signing up for the service, users will have access to a huge collection of Kindle eBooks and “thousands of audiobooks” on any device that supports the Kindle app.
On Kindle Unlimited’s home page, Amazon touts the availability of popular series like Harry Potter, The Hunger Games, and The Lord of the Rings. While these are definitely big gets for the service, Kindle Unlimited still lacks many well-known books (for example, YA favorites from John Green, James Dashner, Veronica Roth, and Rainbow Rowell are currently unavailable).
On the other hand, books that did make it into the Unlimited library include the Diary of a Wimpy Kid books, Flash Boys: A Wall Street Revolt, Water for Elephants, Oh Myyy! – There Goes The Internet, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, All the King’s Men, Wonder Boys, Ask for It, The Princess Bride, The 5 Love Languages: The Secret to Love that Lasts, The Atlantis Gene, Kitchen Confidential, The Sisterhood, Crazy Little Thing, The Blind Side, and The Giver, plus thousands of classics such as Animal Farm, To the Lighthouse, 2001: A Space Odyssey, Cat’s Cradle, and The Good Earth.
Amazon is offering a 30-day free trial for those of you who are curious about the service. At the same link you can find more details.
Will you give Kindle Unlimited a try?
Like Netflix, Kindle Unlimited has notable holes in its library, but that won’t necessarily stop people for signing up.
