Freshman newcomer Brooks Wheelan joined SNL for its recent 39th season but confirmed that he will not be returning to the late-night comedy show in the fall.
The 27 year old actor confirmed the news of his departure from SNL in a recent tweet to his 32,000 followers:
Had a blast and loved every second of it. I'm totally honored to be able to make this next joke… FIRED FROM NEW YORK IT'S SATURDAY NIGHT!
— Brooks Wheelan (@brookswheelan) July 14, 2014
Wheelan was best known for his appearances on Weekend Update and a variety of impressions including Jared Leto and Kid Rock just to name a few.
SNL rebooted in its 39th season last year when a majority of its key players left following season 38. Last season also saw the departure of long-time favorite Seth Meyers as he went on to helm Late Night following Jimmy Fallon’s move to The Tonight Show. Midway through last season, following some controversy surrounding the lack of diversity in the cast, SNL also hired newcomer Sasheer Zamata.
There’s no word on anyone else’s status on the show as of yet. SNL will return in the fall for its record-breaking and monumental 40th season.
It’s not all sad news for SNL cast members recently, however. Current cast member Kate McKinnon was just nominated for an Emmy in the Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy category for her work on SNL. No SNL cast member had been nominated in the category since Kristen Wiig left the show. Something tells us Kate might be sticking around for season 40.
