As if Chester’s Mill didn’t already have enough to deal with, it seems like there are some biblical plagues raining down upon them in this week’s Under The Dome.
Suspicious behavior
Barbie catches Lake Girl rifling through his belongings. She claims she’s looking for reminders, because she’s sure she knows him from somewhere. Julia storms in and yells at Barbie for interrogating her, but then they’re off to Big Jim’s “Mandatory Citizen Registration” at the Angie McAllister Memorial Diner.
Jim is getting a shave, and there’s some tension between Jim and the town barber, Lyle, because Lyle apparently had a history with Jim’s deceased wife. Lyle holds the straight razor threateningly close to Jim’s throat for a moment.
Meanwhile, Junior is still freaking out, because he thinks he killed Angie while he was blacked out. Sam tells him his mom used to have blackouts as well, but when she went back to the place where she blacked out, she would have flashes of memory. Junior decides to head back to the school to see if he has any flashbacks of the night Angie died.
Storm’s a-brewin
Everyone has gathered in the diner to fill out their census forms. Rebecca asks Joe to open the project room at school, because they’re going to build a windmill to generate electricity. She then hands out pots and pans to catch rain for drinking water, but not so fast, because guess what? It’s raining blood! Lyle is sure this blood rain is a sign of the end times, but Rebecca takes the scientific approach, saying it’s not really blood, in part because it burns like acid. Rebecca and Jim go out to investigate, but Jim doesn’t see a hooded figure in the road until it’s too late, and swerves off the road, into a tree. Hood Man pulls Jim out of the car, hops in, and drives away.
Joe tries to pull up windmill info on his tablet, but hey, he’s getting a wifi signal! And lots of emails, including one from his dad, outside the dome, telling him to take care of his sister. Ouch. Lake Girl comforts Joe, calling him “Sweetie,” and Norrie does NOT appreciate it. She offers Junior the tablet so he can check his messages, and when he does, he has an email from someone called “houndsofdiana” with the subject line, “I can help you, James.” It leads to a webpage with a video of his mom, explaining that she’s alive, she knows she’ll see him again, but if he has any questions, to talk to Lyle. The connection is broken before she can continue, and he throws on an adorable yellow rain slicker and runs outside.
The End is Near
Sam, Julia, and Barbie rescue Jim and bring him back to the clinic, and before he goes completely unconscious, he tells them about Lyle. Barbie and Julia go to the barber shop to investigate, and while they don’t find anything incriminating, they do find a picture from the summer of ’88 of Lyle, Sam, and Pauline. They radio Sam to find out Lyle and Pauline dated 25 years ago, and he hasn’t spoken to Lyle since she died. Junior shows up at the barber shop looking for Lyle, and says he wants to help find him.
Rebecca wakes up tied to a chair, and who should be holding her captive but Lyle. He doesn’t like her science, as he’s convinced it’s the End of Times, and he doesn’t want her screwing it up. So with talk of baptizing her, he takes a bowl of acid blood water and pours it on the back of her neck. She tries to play along, but Lyle says she’s a lost cause, and grabs a gun, putting it to her head. Just then, Barbie and Junior bust in, guns a-blazin, followed by an alarmed Julia. Lyle makes them put their guns down, and Julia asks him not to hurt Rebecca. She appeals to his faith, and connection with the dome, saying the dome speaks to her, too, and it’s there to protect everyone. She asks Lyle to help her achieve the dome’s true plan, but just then, Rebecca frees her hands and throws the bowl of acid blood rain in Lyle’s face.
Thin the herd
Joe thinks there must be some kind of crack in the dome, and if they can find the source of the Internet signal, they might be able to find a way out. Following the signal leads them to where Angie died, and while Norrie tries to talk him out of it, Joe is determined to continue. Lake Girl tells him not to be frightened, and Norrie tells her to back off. Lake Girl approaches the locker with the bloody hand print and magically knows the combo. Joe pulls open the door to find…nothing. The locker is empty. Norrie shoves Lake Girl against the lockers, asking her how the hell she knew this random locker combination, but not her own name. Joe thinks he might be able to solve this mystery.
Rebecca stops the rain, but Chester’s Mill is still in trouble. She says 3/4 of the residents can survive, if they get rid of the weakest ones, and it’s all Big Jim’s call. Julia is horrified, and realizes the census was just to determine who was the most kill-able. She starts to storm out, and is furious when Barbie doesn’t follow her. She feels he’s taking Rebecca’s side, and that she did not know him as well as she thought she did.
Revelation
Sam shows up at Lyle’s jail cell, making it clear that they are secret cohorts, and tells Lyle he told him to lie low, that they promised 25 years ago to make sure “what we buried stayed buried.” But Lyle says the dome has nullified that agreement. Sam protests, but Lyle says “I’ve grown weary of this conversation,” which is a line we should all start using. Junior sees this conversation on the security camera, and comes to question Lyle after Sam leaves. Lyle says he’ll tell Junior everything if Junior frees him.
Joe looks at the school records of every student who has ever owned locker #1821, because that’s totally a thing, and the name “Melanie Cross,” from 1988, catches Lake Girl’s eye. Joe looks Melanie Cross up in the 1988 yearbook, and there’s Lake Girl, looking the same age she looks now, almost 30 years later.
Under The Dome season 2, episode 4, “Revelation,” airs Monday, July 21 at 10 p.m. on CBS.
