Lucasfilm and Disney have announced that Josh Trank will direct a standalone Star Wars movie.
The lead character in his one-off Star Wars film was not shared today.
The announcement was made via the official Star Wars website. “We’re thrilled to welcome Josh into the family,” says Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy in a statement. “He is such an incredible talent and has a great imagination and sense of innovation. That makes him perfectly suited to Star Wars, and for this new slate of movies that reach beyond the core characters and storylines of Episodes I through IX.”
Added Trank, “The magic of the Star Wars Universe defined my entire childhood. The opportunity to expand on that experience for future generations is the most incredible dream of all time.”
The director wrote and helmed Chronicle and is currently wearing the same badges for next year’s The Fantastic Four.
Just two weeks ago Lucasfilm announced that Godzilla director Gareth Edwards will direct a standalone Star Wars movie. The subject of Edwards’ film wasn’t shared either.
Though the studio has not announced the subject of any of the standalone Star Wars movies, the rumor mill indicates that they’ll focus on Han Solo in his younger years, Boba Fett, and Yoda.
Meanwhile, Star Wars: Episode VII is currently filming in the Abu Dhabi desert under the direction of J.J. Abrams. On Monday the film added Lupita Nyong’o and Gwendoline Christie to its cast. The movie will be released December 2015.
