Jon Hamm may be the epitome of masculinity, but it wasn’t always so for the attractive Mad Men star.
Though he was a working actor for about 10 years before starring in Mad Men, it was AMC’s historical advertising drama that really led to Jon Hamm’s career taking off as it has.
Hamm was 37 by the time Mad Men went on the air, so he likely had several years of just being a normal guy. As Benedict Cumberbatch so wisely said about himself, “I’ve grown up with this face and it’s been in the industry for 10 years,” noting that looks don’t change, but people’s perceptions do.
Just over 10 years before Mad Men happened, Hamm was such a normal guy that he was a contestant on a dating show. On Mark Wahlberg’s (no not that Mark Wahlberg) The Big Date, Hamm didn’t even get to compete as his female counterparts skipped right over him.
The whole video is entertaining enough, but Hamm is most prevalent around the 3:20 mark. Check it out:
Introduced as a 25-year-old waiter, Hamm explains how he’d impress a girl on a first date. “Well, we’d start out with some fabulous food, some fabulous conversation, and end it with a fabulous foot massage for an evening of total fabulousity,” Hamm said.
Unfortunately for Hamm, he just wasn’t able to woo Mary, the first female with a chance to pick him. Nor was he stolen by the next female contest. Surprisingly enough, no one wanted 25-year-old Jon Hamm.
It must have been the hair.
There is an enlightening message to be forced into this story. Though 25-year-old waiter Hamm didn’t have much luck at that point in his life, he has had a miraculous turn around. This goes to show that it really can happen to anybody, if you become as good looking and successful as Jon Hamm, that is.
Would you have passed on 25-year-old Jon Hamm?
