Read our Castle season 6, episode 16 recap and discuss what you think about Alexis moving home.
The episode opens with a murder victim in a hotel room being discovered by the maids. It quickly cuts to Kate and Rick in bed. They wake to find Alexis in the kitchen having coffee. She is still living on her own, and Rick can’t figure out why she hasn’t moved home.
Kate and Rick head to the crime scene. The victim’s name is Justin, and he insisted he stay in room 147. He arrived at the hotel without luggage and was set to stay for only one night. The front desk said he was texting someone, but Kate couldn’t find the phone. In fact, he had a different phone on him.
Justin is an actor in a very Off-Broadway play and is dating one of his follow actresses. While interviewing the actors, they discover that Justin had an incident with a woman at a coffee shop. Anita, the woman who argued with Justin, comes in to be questioned and confesses to murdering him. Unfortunately for Kate, Anita has an alibi for the time frame of the murder.
When Kate interviews Anita about her confession, there is a startling amount of accuracy to what she is saying. She can retell every detail about the crime scene. Anita admits to not knowing how she knows him, but says he was responsible for her drinking. She says the last two weeks have been blurry. She remembers arguing with Justin. Anita says that when she saw him, she had to warn him because she felt like she had to hurt him.
Ryan and Esposito ask Rick for one of his crazy theories, and Rick admits that he has no theories. Esposito says he can’t find any connections between Anita and Justin. Kate calls in Dr. Holloway to assess Anita. Meanwhile, Ryan and Esposito go to Anita’s to look for clues. They discover the last two weeks are missing from both her day planner and online calendar.
Dr. Holloway says there is nothing wrong with Anita. He will do a workup, but she seems stable. Just when things couldn’t get weirder, a man walks into the precinct to confess to killing Justin. At first Kate thinks it is a hoax until he begins to tell the same story as Anita. Sam says he killed Justin because he was filled with rage, and like Anita, he doesn’t actually know the victim.
Neither confessor knows the other and Kate can’t figure out what is going on. Rick comes up with a theory involving the confessors being psychically linked to the real killer. Just as Kate is laughing at Rick’s theory, a third person walks in to confess to the crime.
Esposito and Ryan discover a man had been around Anita’s apartment about the time things began to get fuzzy with her memory. He was also found around Sam’s house. Miles Madsen is the man that was arguing with Justin when Anita walked up to him at the coffee shop.
Kate keeps getting texts throughout the day, and she leaves to go meet Alexis. She is worried that Alexis doesn’t want to move home because of her. Alexis doesn’t want to move home because she knows everything said before she moved out was true. Alexis says it was her mistake and she needs to fix it. Kate tries to talk her around to moving home.
Esposito and Ryan manage to track Miles Madsen to the Eternal Horizons Institute. It appears to be a cult saying it will help people be released from the negative anchors holding them down. The company also uses the symbol that all three suspects having been drawing.
When Rick and Kate arrive at the EHI, the secretary already knows who they are. Dr. Bower was expecting them. The doctor appears on the screen from Stockholm. He doesn’t know Justin, but does know Madsen, who he refuses to speak about. He also says that the suspects aren’t part of EHI. Dr. Bower is certain Kate won’t get a warrant to search his records.
Kate doesn’t get her warrant, but Rick discovers that EHI treats people with alcoholism, anger management issues, and assertiveness, which are something all three confessors suffer from. Dr. Holloway finds high levels of a drug in their system that could easily affect their memory. The only way they could know so much about the murder is if they were actually at the crime scene.
While talking with the three confessors together, each begins to describe the scene and the only difference is the amount of water bottles they see in the fridge. Rick realizes that they couldn’t have been in the room because when the fridge door opens, it blocks the view to the inside.
Kate finds that EHI rented a whole floor of hotel rooms at the same chain hotel, including room 147. That information is enough to get them a warrant, which is when they discover that Dr. Bower is actually in the building, not in Stockholm. Dr. Bower did indeed know Justin. He acted in a video that mimicked his death, in order to help people let go of their issues.
The stage manager at the playhouse, Pam, was actually the one who killed Justin. She wanted to get revenge on EHI because her brother was killed at one of their events.
In the closing scene, Kate and Rick are recapping the case over a glass of wine when there is a knock at the door. Alexis is standing on the other side and asks to come home. Rick looks extremely happy.
The preview for next week’s episode looks intense! Who is ready to see Kate go undercover as a contract killer?
