What exactly does “band leader” entail, you ask? According to Seth Meyers’ Twitter account, which announced the good news, Armisen will have an active part in the band during shows but will also break away when he is filming his IFC show Portlandia:
Fred will curate and lead the band, and continue to run it even when he's off shooting Portlandia. #8GBand

Fred Armisen was a fan-favorite when he appeared on Saturday Night Live from 2002 until his final season in 2013. He’s best known for his impressions of Prince to his improv character Garth, in which he paired up with former cast member Kristen Wiig during Weekend Update segments.
With Jimmy Fallon hosting The Tonight Show, and Seth Meyers and Fred Armisen on Late Night, there’s no doubt that SNL has worked its way into dominating NBC’s current late night comedy lineup. Just for fun, check out the video below showing Fred Armisen and The Roots’ Questlove having a “Drumoff”:
The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon debuts on NBC February 17 with Will Smith and musical guest U2. Late Night with Seth Meyers debuts one week later, on February 24.
