Because no book series will go untouched, Captain Underpants is becoming a movie, and the cast will be led by Kevin Hart and Ed Helms.
According to The Wrap’s exclusive, Hart and Helms will lead the cast along with Nick Kroll, Jordan Peele, and Thomas Middleditch.
From the report, Hart will play the character George Beard, while Middleditch will play Harold Hutchins. Just like in the books, the two characters who play pranks, hide in their treehouse, and write comic books. But their whole world changes when they accidentally bring the titular Captain Underpants to life. It all happens when a hypnotism experiment involving Principal Mr. Krupp does not go according to plan. Helms will voice Krupp.
Peele will voice Melvin, nerdy nemesis of George and Harold. Kroll will voice the Captain Underpants villain Professor Poopypants.
Captain Underpants will be directed by Rob Letterman, most known for writing and directing Monsters vs Aliens. The script was adapted from the Dav Pilkey book series by Nick Stoller, whose notable writing credits include The Muppets and its upcoming sequel.
“These actors are some of the funniest around today. Letting them loose with these characters is sure to be a hysterical ride,” director Letterman said.
The opening joke aside, the Captain Underpants series has been a popular one since the initial release of the first book in 1997. The series, which includes 10 different entries, has been published in over 20 languages and has over 70 million books in print worldwide. Three more entries are currently planned.
The animated feature from DreamWorks Animation does not currently have a release date.
