Team StarKid co-creator Nick Lang posted a long-forgotten trailer for the group’s Very Potter shows, and it’s both a must-watch for old-school fans and a great intro for Darren Criss fans who never quite got the whole StarKid thing.
StarKid writer, co-founder and all-around mastermind Nick Lang posted this long-lost video on his personal YouTube account last night. Here’s what Nick had to say about the rather moving trailer:
This is a trailer I cut together for the first two “Very Potter Musical” shows a few years ago (back when there still were only two of them). We made this video to send to Oprah, who was looking to do a show about the Harry Potter fandom. We never heard anything back from her, but I think the trailer turned out well. I re-discovered it recently and it brought a tear to my eye, so I thought I’d share.
Watch Nick’s trailer for A Very Potter Musical and A Very Potter Sequel below.
The video features footage of many cherished characters and scenes from the first two Very Potter shows, and demonstrates both the humor and the heart of the musicals that made StarKid a viral success. It is sure to fill any Team StarKid fan with a bit of happy-sad nostalgia, and it’s a great resource for explaining A Very Potter Musical to those Potter or Glee fans who aren’t sure if they want to sit through three hours of grainy YouTube footage.
For those not in the know, Team StarKid formed in 2009, after a group of students at the University of Michigan performed A Very Potter Musical, a Harry Potter parody show which went viral online. A Very Potter Sequel premiered in the summer of 2010, and the group completed their planned Potter trilogy with A Very Potter Senior Year, performed as a one-off in August 2012.
The group’s Harry Potter in all three Potter shows was Darren Criss, a 2009 U of M graduate who pursued a successful acting career and rose to fame as Glee’s Blaine Anderson not long after the release of A Very Potter Sequel. Interspersed with the Potter shows, Team StarKid has performed four other musicals, two live tours, and two sketch comedy shows.
It’s a shame that Team StarKid never made it onto Oprah, but we’re grateful that Nick found this video and chose to share it! Keeping in trailer-editing news, Nick also revealed that he’s currently working on one for StarKid’s most recent musical, Twisted, which will be out soon.
