There’s a plethora of new promos from the CW for The Vampire Diaries season 5 and The Originals season 1 premiere, as well as some casting news for The Vampire Diaries.
A few days ago, we shared a juicy new promo that involved Katherine, Silas, Damon, Elena and company, and now we have glimpses of new footage for the premiere.
This promo emphasizes that both The Vampire Diaries and The Originals will air on the same night: Thursday, October 3. There are a couple of new scenes peppered in from both shows, including a glimpse of Elijah from The Originals and a couple party scenes from The Vampire Diaries.
Speaking of The Vampire Diaries, there’s a new casting announcement! Australian actor Rick Cosnett has been cast in the role of Dr. Wes Maxfield who, according to EW, is a biology professor at Whitmore College, the college Elena and Caroline will be attending.
Maxfield will quickly make enemies with the two leading ladies and things get more complicated as Caroline and Elena start to think he’s hiding a “dark and dangerous” secret. It’s unknown if Maxfield will keep his native Australian accent for the role.
Meanwhile, in the same universe but different location, the Original vampires are making an impression in the town of New Orleans in their new show The Originals.
There are two new promos for the series premiere, both with a specific theme. A week ago we shared an Elijah themed promo, and now they’ve released two promos centered around Marcel as well as immortality in general:
Although neither of the promos above share new footage, they do give us quite a jolt of excitement as October 3 is fast approaching.
We can’t wait for an actual trailer for The Originals to premiere from the brand new pilot they shot, which is specifically very different from the backdoor pilot aired in the middle of The Vampire Diaries‘ fourth season.
The new The Originals pilot will have the challenge of introducing newcomers to the show, characters, and storylines whilst also keeping in mind viewers who already know the backstory and are looking for something new.
Back in June executive producer Julie Plec even joked about how hard writing the second pilot for the show was, tweeting:
Hey, YOU try writing a pilot episode to a show you already wrote and aired the pilot for.

We’re sure she did an amazing job and can’t wait to feast our eyes on it!
Will you be watching ‘The Vampire Diaries’ and ‘The Originals’ back to back on premiere night?
And don’t forget: While both shows will be returning on the same night, Thursday October 3, with The Vampire Diaries leading at 8:00PM eastern/pacific and then followed by The Originals at 9, keep in mind that The Originals will then change to it’s normally scheduled day of Tuesdays, planned to begin on October 8.
