Girls season 3 saw a new actor, Michael Zegen, added to its lineup today. Could Zegen be the new Charlie after Christopher Abbott’s abrupt departure?
Earlier today, Deadline confirmed that Zegen will be joining the cast of Girls season 3. Zegen is also a regular on another HBO hit show, Boardwalk Empire, in which he plays the contemptible gangster Bugsy Siegel.
Rumor has it, Zegen may be filling the role of a major male figure after Christopher Abbott left his character, Charlie, behind. Abbott exited the show because of disagreements with show creator and star Lena Dunham over where Girls season 3 was headed, allegedly.
Allison Williams (Marnie) told TVLine that Abbott’s departure was a huge loss for her character’s story line, and that it was “almost as if we skipped her third season and have gone on to single Marnie.”
Could that mean that Dunham is writing in a new love interest for Marnie in Girls season 3?
Details of Zegen’s role, as well as how many times he will appear in season 3, are still unclear.
Zegen certainly has the look of a starving artist-meets-boy-next-door, which Marnie seems to adore (a perfect mix of Booth and Charlie!). And honestly, if their past interactions said anything, it didn’t seem like Marnie and Charlie’s relationship was going to make it too far into season 3 before we got bored.
Zegen will be returning to Boardwalk Empire in the fall. He’s also had recurring roles in The Walking Dead, Rescue Me, and How To Make It In America
