One entertainment source says that Family Guy and Ted creator Seth MacFarlane has been asked to return as host of the 2014 Academy Awards.
Just Jared quoted a source who stated “After defending his performance, the producers reached out to Seth and invited him back to host the show again. He’s not sure if he’s going to do it, but he has to decide within the next couple of weeks.”
The news arrives on the heels of Wednesday’s news that this year’s Oscars producers are set to return for the 86th annual event.
Seth and producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron were able to deliver a slight uptick in viewers this past February. The 85th annual Oscars were the most watched ceremony in the past three years.
Notably, MacFarlane said in an interview after hosting that there’s no way he would do it again. At the right price and the correct series of words from Zadan and Meron, maybe MacFarlane will change his mind.
But the question is: should MacFarlane host again this soon? Critics and fans were mixed over his performance. One of the most criticized parts of his hosting was the opening sequence in which he spent a lot of time speaking to William Shatner via video screen. It was classic MacFarlane humor, but it was a little too obscure for a wider audience.
Another issue with this year’s show fell in the hands of the producers: the entire night was heavy on movie musicals. While Les Miserables‘ presence was appropriate, segments featuring Chicago and Dreamgirls were not.
