With Monsters, Inc. and Tron related films on the horizon for Disney, its theme parks arm is seriously considering new lands that will capitalize on both franchises.
News of the two new areas at the Disneyland Resort in Anaheim, California came by way of Al Lutz, a very trusted (and always accurate) source for Disneyland news.
‘Monsters, Inc.’-themed land
Writing on his blog at MiceChat, Lutz says that the Monsters, Inc.-themed land is being considered for Disney’s California Adventure park in the area where a Monsters ride already sits. This new land will still make use of the existing ride but add a coaster which allows guests to experience the fast-paced door-to-door chase you see at the end of the 2003 animated Pixar film.
The decision to work on a Monsters, Inc. land came in the wake of California Adventure’s successful Cars Land, which has helped boost the park’s visitor numbers.
‘Tron’-themed land
Disneyland, which sits directly across from California Adventure and was the first ever park built by Walt Disney, is looking to make upgrades as well. Its next big project may just be a Tron-themed land. The idea is to build a “Tron themed speeder bike ride using much of the old PeopleMover route,” says Lutz. “This is an idea that has been thrown around in the past, but in recent months it’s gained serious steam and is quickly nearing a green light from Burbank.”
Not only would this help the park boost rider capacity, but it would also offer “an aesthetic reskin to Tomorrowland and create a more modern and sleeker version of the circa 1967-77 buildings there,” says Lutz.
Both of these new lands appear to be in latter stages of planning, meaning that they could be greenlit sometime this year.
The Monsters, Inc. prequel Monsters University opens in theaters this June, while Tron 3 is rumored to be in the works for a 2014 or 2015 debut.
