Merlin‘s Colin Morgan is ready for the show to be over, but how about coming back for a spin-off? Read his thoughts on the finale here.
Speaking to TV Series Finale, Morgan reaffirms what the actors have all been saying, that Merlin was always planned as a five-year journey and that this is the right time to end it.
However, when asked if he would ever consider coming back for a spin-off project, he says, “Never say never, because the show’s done so well and it has such an amazing following.” But he’d be hesitant to continue the story after the series 5 finale, because, “I think it’s such a strong ending. It’s the strongest the series has ever been. So, to continue it on, from an actor’s point of view, there’s a risk that I might not enjoy doing that.”
As far as the ending goes, Morgan previews that, “it’s all like I expected. You know, I wasn’t sure where it was exactly going to go and certainly when I read the final script, I was surprised about the story that they told and the way they told it. But, yeah, I think it’s 100% right. I think everyone will be really satisfied with it.”
Morgan also talks about his character, and reflects back on how Merlin has changed over the course of the show. “I think Merlin definitely started out as quite a naïve character,” he says, but now, he has become less trusting and more ruthless – and, “he’s become stronger as a result.”
While he really appreciates his character’s journey, he admits that, “I always thought that a flashback episode would have been really good for Merlin’s life, before he came to Camelot.” That way, audiences could have been given more insight into why he left Ealdor, and how he grew up. “Something great, dark or sinister that changes your view of the character in a way, so you really understand where he comes from,” Morgan explains. “Because his past is a huge, huge mystery both to himself and the audience and I think that would have been a really interesting thing to explore.”
Would you have liked to see a Merlin-centric flashback? Perhaps we could have also seen parts of Arthur and Morgana’s childhoods, or even something from Gaius’ youth?
