While actress Viola Davis doesn’t confirm she’s been cast in Suicide Squad, she’s revealed that she’s working on her schedule to make room for the supervillain film.
Last week there were rumors that Viola Davis was set to play Amanda Waller in Suicide Squad, a role which Oprah Winfrey was reportedly in negotiations to play, but during a press junket for her film Blackhat, Davis somewhat confirms that she’s taking on the role.
The actress is currently tied up with filming on How to Get Away With Murder, but when asked whether she had started reading the Suicide Squad comics she said, “I have not started reading them yet. I’ve read up about her but I’m working out my schedule for Suicide Squad.”
We have to imagine that if she’s working on freeing up her schedule that she’s probably landed the role, or is at least the top choice for the role of Amanda Waller, who despite not possessing any superpowers, has persistently proven herself a powerful antagonist and sometime-ally of the superheroes of the DC universe, often serving as an antihero.
Davis says of the character, “I’m fascinated by her. I’m fascinated by her in this world of superhero-ness because she is not a woman that you would expect. I think that she is a massive contradiction. She’s this big powerful black woman, hard, ready to pick up a gun and shoot anyone at will. I’m fascinated in exploring her psychology, just put it that way. And I’m excited to pick up a gun.”
She later revealed that her action sequences in Blackhat have her ready to be in a superhero movie, which boasts a massively talented cast including Jared Leto as the Joker, Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, Will Smith as Deadshot, Cara Delevingne as the Enchantress, Tom Hardy as Rick Flag, and Jai Courtney as Captain Boomerang.
Viola Davis is one of the best actresses in Hollywood right now, so Suicide Squad’s cast continues to gain Oscar-worthy talent which should provide a unique experience for moviegoers that are getting bombarded by superhero films.
Suicide Squad’s release date has been set for August 5, 2016.
