The Sundance spin-off film festival Sundance London has been cancelled for 2015, and investors are unsure about its future.
The Sundance Film Festival has taken place annually in Utah, USA since 1978. It is known as one of America’s biggest independent film festivals, with a record 46,731 attendees in 2012.
For the past three years, a Sundance London festival has brought the event to Europe, but the scheduled 2015 celebration has now been cancelled.
Last year’s four-day festival ran in April, and screened 21 of the movies that also ran at Sundance. Movie highlights included The One I Love, Frank and Fruitvale Station.
Speaking about the cancellation of Sundance London 2015, a spokesperson told The Hollywood Reporter:
“We loved connecting with the vibrant community of filmmakers and audiences in the U.K., and following a successful three years with The O2 [Arena], we continue to explore our options for Sundance London.”
It will be interesting to see whether Sundance continues its expansion to Europe and other parts of the world.
The biggest European film festival is Cannes in France, closely followed by Germany’s Berlinale. European film festivals are by nature very international, including works from Europe, Asia, Africa, Australia and America.
This year’s Sundance Film Festival will kick off on Jan. 22, and run through Feb. 1.
