Selfie premieres tomorrow night on ABC, and we can’t wait! Here’s a list of 10 little-known facts about the new show and its stars…
Here’s what you do know: Selfie is a new ABC sitcom starring Karen Gillan from Doctor Who, and John Cho from Harold & Kumar and Star Trek.
It follows Eliza Dooley, a young woman obsessed with social media. After a personal scandal, she enlists marketing genius Henry to help change her image and make her appear more likeable.
Selfie airs Tuesday nights at 8/7c on ABC, starting tomorrow.
And here’s what you might not know about the series:
1. It’s based on ‘Pygmalion’ and ‘My Fair Lady’
George Bernard Shaw’s classic play is getting another remake, this time with Eliza Doolittle as a socialmedialite and Henry Higgins as the man designated to “re-brand” her.
2. Karen Gillan is wearing a wig – made from her own hair
Having to cut off all her hair for Guardians of the Galaxy, Gillan is still sporting a very short style, and her long locks on Selfie are fake. But it’s actually her real hair, which Marvel made into a wig for her! And bonus fact: the wig will also make an appearance in Star Wars: Episode VII.
3. John Cho’s father calls the show “Self Picture”
That is, after all, the non-cutesy term for “Selfie.” We don’t think it’s quite as catchy though. (Cho revealed this on Jimmy Kimmel Live!)
4. Creator Emily Kapnek also made ‘Suburgatory’
Expect some of the same spunk and flair in Selfie as you found in Suburgatory, as Emily Kapnek is the creator of both. When Suburgatory ended, she was already working on her new show.
5. Gillan encouraged Cho to get more social media savvy
Echoing their characters, Gillan is much more enthusiastic about social media than Cho. But at Gillan’s urging, Cho has started using Twitter more to interact with fans, and admits the service does have its uses.
6. Supporting actor David Harewood once appeared on ‘Doctor Who’
Harewood plays Henry and Eliza’s boss on Selfie, but the British actor has previously appeared on Doctor Who – though it was before Gillan’s time. Harewood played the villainous Joshua Naismith in the Tennant episode “The End of Time.”
7. Da’Vine Joy Randolph is a musical star
If Selfie ever does a musical episode, expect the charming secretary Charmonique to break into song: Randolph was nominated for a Tony for her performance in the original Broadway production of Ghost.
8. Eliza Dooley is on Twitter and Instagram
ABC has set up official Twitter and Instagram pages for Eliza, which you can follow and interact with! She shares exclusive selfies (go figure), and tweets in character – we’re just wondering who’s actually writing this stuff, cause surely it’s not a clause in Gillan’s contract?
9. The word “selfie” was added to the dictionary earlier this year
Despite being a slang term, “selfie” is now an official word according to the Merriam-Webster dictionary. Also added were “tweep” and “hashtag.” In other dictionary news (who knew that was a thing?), the Oxford Dictionary proclaimed “selfie” the Word of the Year in 2013.
10. The pilot has been available to watch online since August
So seriously, what are you waiting for?!
Tune in tomorrow night for the first episode of Selfie, which airs at 8/7c on ABC.
