The Lego Movie and 21 Jump Street directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller were in talks to direct Ghostbusters 3, but they’ve reportedly turned it down.
It was a couple weeks ago that Lord and Miller entered talks to direct Ghostbusters 3. The duo is three for three with Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, 21 Jump Street, and The Lego Movie, so they immediately would have inspired confidence in the film. If there’s anybody who can take a project with history and turn it into something maybe even greater, it’s Lord and Miller.
But according to The Wrap reporter Jeff Sneider on Twitter, it no longer lookes like that’s a probability.
Hearing LORD & MILLER ended up walking away from GHOSTBUSTERS 3 job. They were the studio's choice but wanted to keep their options open…

@mjsamps They could very well return to GHOSTBUSTERS, I'm just told the studio is meeting with other directors now in case they don't…

Assuming Sneider’s sources are good, it looks like Lord and Miller won’t be directing Ghostbusters 3 after all. Having them as directors would have likely been the best case scenario for the film, but after an evaluation, it looks like they decided it wasn’t the best case scenario for them, and we can certainly respect that. Lord and Miller have made the right choices so far, so we don’t question them here.
We wonder who Sony will turn to potentially direct now. Whoever it is, Sony can only hope they can convince Bill Murray to return.
As of now, Murray has not said he would come back for the threequel. Co-star Dan Aykroyd was among those attempting to convince him to return, but Murray apparently has not even responded. If Ghostbusters 3 is indeed to happen, it really does need Murray to star.
