Garrett Hedlund has signed on to play the lead role of Hook in Warner Bros. new film Pan.
Joe Wright’s classic retelling of Pan has been flying a bit under the radar, but with Garrett Hedlund signing on as Hook, the origin story is about to jump into the spotlight.
Directed by Joe Wright, the roles in Pan are apparently quite coveted. According to Deadline the Hook role came down to Hedlund, BoardWalk Empire’s Jack Huston and Ezra Miller from Perks of Being a Wallflower.
The film’s script has been written by Jason Fuchs. Berlanti Productions is producing the film with Greg Berlanti and Sarah Schechter from Warner Bros.
Pan’s logline states: An orphan is taken to the magical world of Neverland, where he becomes the savior of the natives and leads a rebellion against evil pirates.
Hugh Jackman has been rumored to be attached to play Blackbeard, the captain of the evildoers. Recent Bond villain, Javier Bardem, has also been mentioned for the role as well.
Hedlund was most recently seen in the Golden Globe nominated Inside Llewyn Davis as Johnny Five, and alongside Kristen Stewart in 2012’s On The Road.
Hedlund’s unique voice and mysterious look should make for an exciting portrayal of the villain, made incredibly popular by Dustin Hoffman’s memorable performance in 1991’s Hook.
Pan’s release date has been set for July 17, 2015. It will be released in 3D and 2D.
