Just last week, Quentin Tarantino had finished the script for The Hateful Eight and had planned to film it within the year. After a script leak, he’s shelving the project.
Deadline is reporting that Tarantino no longer plans to film The Hateful Eight. After finishing the script, he gave the script to six people last week. His trust was breached and the script has leaked to all of Hollywood.
“I’m very, very depressed,” Tarantino told Deadline. “I finished a script, a first draft, and I didn’t mean to shoot it until next winter, a year from now. I gave it to six people, and apparently it’s gotten out today.”
Who leaked the script? That’s not currently known, and it’s unlikely that we, much less Tarantino, will ever find out that answer. An agent read the script at the house of Django Unchained producer Reggie Hudlin, but that agent didn’t end up with the script, but Tarantino feels betrayed that Hudlin did even that.
“That’s a betrayal, but not crippling because the agent didn’t end up with the script. There is an ugly maliciousness to the rest of it. I gave it to three actors: Michael Madsen, Bruce Dern, Tim Roth. The one I know didn’t do this is Tim Roth. One of the others let their agent read it, and that agent has now passed it on to everyone in Hollywood. I don’t know how these fucking agents work, but I’m not making this next. I’m going to publish it, and that’s it for now. I give it out to six people, and if I can’t trust them to that degree, then I have no desire to make it. I’ll publish it. I’m done. I’ll move on to the next thing. I’ve got 10 more where that came from.”
That last bit is some solace to Tarantino fans, but it’s still sad for anyone who wanted to see him make this western next. Luckily, Tarantino has lots of scripts so we don’t have to wait for him to write a completely new one. Hopefully we’ll see a new film around the same time we would have seen The Hateful Eight.
Even though Tarantino suspects it was Bruce Dern’s agency that leaked the script, he still has respect for Dern and plans to write him into whatever film he does next, given that Dern would accept such a role. After his brilliant, Academy Award nominated outing in Nebraska, we certainly hope the two work together.
