Anchorman 2 is still a month away from hitting theaters, but talks of a spinoff are already being floated by the film’s director.
Spoiler warning. A plot point in Anchorman 2 is revealed by the director in this article.
Adam McKay says in a recent interview with Collider that they are considering an Anchorman spinoff in which Ron Burgundy takes care of his baby boy who makes his debut in next month’s sequel.
“I guess it’s out of the bag that Ron has a son [in ‘Anchorman 2’]? I mean, I guess it’s kinda out of the bag that Ron has a son? Or did I just let it out of the bag? I just let it out of the bag,” McKay said. “So we wanted to do the adventures of his son, Walter Burgundy, and Baxter. And I actually pitched it to Adam Goodman at Paramount and he said, ‘That’s not a bad idea.’ So there’s a chance we might be doing a ‘Milo & Otis,’ G-rated, PG, ‘Adventures Of Walter And Baxter,’ which would be amazing.”
It’s not clear if Ron Burgundy’s son is born during Anchorman 2 or if the baby was born in between the two movies. Regardless, McKay wants to make this potential Anchorman spinoff PG so it could reach a wider audience.
If kids can see the Anchorman spinoff, the film’s box office potential is surely huge since parents and young adults will have a big interest in seeing the movie as well. The tricky part would be balancing the film to appeal to people of all ages while pleasing the established audience who’s used to the crude humor.
Anchorman 2 arrives in theaters December 20, 2013.
