ITV has released the first scene from Downton Abbey series 4, episode 1. In it, we see Lady Mary (Michelle Dockery) still in dire straits over Matthew.
In the clip, Lady Mary is with Anna (Joanne Froggatt) when the latter suggests a purple article of clothing in case Mary wants to go for a walk in the cold weather. She isn’t interested in wearing it unless she has a black one, representative of her mental state.
At that point a new character enters, Master George’s nanny, and pleasantly invites Lady Mary out for a walk. She declines and calls her son a “poor little orphan.” Anna is quick to remind her that George is not an orphan because he still has his mother.
It’s clear that the first episode of Downton Abbey series 4 will see Lady Mary still struggling from the death of her loved one despite it being several months since the accident occurred. In a trailer for the upcoming series, we see a clip from this same episode in which Violet (Maggie Smith) tells Mary that she has to continue with her life.
Series 3 ended with the birth of Master George and the death of Matthew in a car accident as he drove by himself. The episode aired on Christmas Day in the United Kingdom, which spoiled the holiday for many.
Downton Abbey series 4 premieres this Sunday, September 22 on ITV in the United Kingdom.
