Star Trek‘s current Spock Zachary Quinto has revealed that even though J.J. Abrams will be directing Star Wars Episode VII, he still wants to direct Star Trek 3.
According to Buzzhub (via SlashFilm), Zachary Quinto spoke about his and director J.J. Abrams’ future with the franchise at the 2013 Galway Film Fleadh.
In the interview, Quinto revealed that Abrams was planning on directing Star Trek 3, though he didn’t say much more. Unfortunately, the exact quote is not available.
Quinto also revealed that Abrams is hoping to film it next year:
“Star Trek 3” should be filming, I suppose, next year. It’s going to be made a lot quicker than the last one. That’s the plan, although nothing is confirmed yet.
This is really surprising to learn, and we have our doubts. Abrams should be filming Star Wars Episode VII next year, as its planned to be released in 2015. It’s highly unlikely that he’ll have time to do both, especially since Star Trek 3 doesn’t even have a completed script yet.
As we’ve reported in the past, Abrams has never thought it likely that he’d be able to return to direct Star Trek 3. Previously, a profile published about him in the New York Times showed that it was unlikely that he’d direct:
He was noncommittal about directing a third “Star Trek,” except to say that Bad Robot would produce it. He said it was unlikely that Paramount would wait another four years for such a film, in which case his “Star Wars” schedule would likely conflict with it.

There’s always a chance that Abrams will be able to work his schedule out so that he’s able to work on both Star Trek Episode VII and Star Trek 3, but then the risk is run that both are rushed, and there’s no party involved that would benefit from that, not even Abrams.
