Following the news that a Veronica Mars movie is indeed going to happen, creator Rob Thomas has spoken out about potentially reviving the TV series.
Veronica Mars fans were quick to respond to Kristen Bell and Rob Thomas’ Kickstarter campaign to raise the $2 million needed to fund a movie continuation of the cult drama series. Even though the goal has already been reached, money is still being donated, and the current total stands at more than $3.6 million.
With fans so passionate about the project, many are now wondering whether, on top of the movie (which will premiere in early 2014), Thomas might consider bringing Veronica Mars back for a full TV season.
And the showrunner would be all about that. “Trust me, though, if Netflix is reading this, and they want to do a Veronica Mars series, I’d do anything to make it happen,” he tells E! Online in a new interview.
However, speaking more realistically, Thomas does add that it wouldn’t be viable to fund a TV series with Kickstarter money, as, well, “TV series cost a lot.”
But never fear, Veronica Mars fans, because Thomas promises that the movie won’t deviate too much from what the TV show was like.
“I’m going to keep it very much like the series,” he says. “Veronica left Neptune and quit her work as a P.I. shortly after our final episode aired,” and in the movie, which takes 10 years later, we’ll see her “returning to her roots.”
Finally, Thomas discusses what actors might be reprising their roles for the movie. While he’s hoping to get everyone back, so far only himself and Kristen Bell have committed themselves to the project – although we can probably lock in New Girl‘s Max Greenfield (who played Deputy Leo, a recurring character).
Greenfield has been “driving a hard bargain” to be a part of the movie. “He’ll be the Leo we’ve known and loved,” Thomas reveals, and “we’ll find him working as a detective for the San Diego Police Department.”
Other than that, “I hope to have all your favorites in there. That’s certainly the plan. It’s why I’m building it around the high school reunion,” Thomas explains. And while no contracts have been drawn up yet, “I’ve talked to all the actors. Everyone wants to do it. We want everyone.”
We’ll keep you updated as more actors officially sign on to this project! Here’s hoping for a full cast reprise.
