Since Emma Watson left talks to star as Cinderella in a new live-action film, attention has turned to Saoirse Ronan.
The actress, who will star in the book-to-film adaptation of Stephenie Meyer’s The Host on March 29 as Melanie Stryder, is reportedly the new frontrunner. WENN says that Ronan “emerged as the new frontrunner” following Watson backing out.
Cinderella will be directed by Kenneth Branagh and hopes to shoot later this year for a 2014 release. The only person cast in the film so far is Cate Blanchett who will take on the role of the evil stepmother.
You may know Ronan from her roles in Atonement, The Lovely Bones, or City of Ember. The actress has a slew of projects lined up in the next year including How I Live Now, The Grand Budapest Hotel, and How to Catch a Monster. If she were to take on Cinderella, her schedule may prove to be a bit challenging to work with.
We like the choice of Ronan for Cinderella because she has the girl-next-door look, which is perfect for the early part of her character arc.
We’ll continue to keep an eye on developments surrounding the film project which will inevitably be a highly-anticipated movie for Disney. Its recent successes on the live-action fairytale front include Alice in Wonderland and now Oz the Great and Powerful. The latter debuted this weekend to a staggering $80 million box office despite mixed reviews.
