Making its premiere at the Sundance Film Festival over the weekend, the Joseph Gordon-Levitt-directed film Don John’s Addiction has been purchased by Relativity Media for $4 million to distribute in the United States.
In addition to distribution, Relativity has pledged $25 million for promotional purposes when the film opens in the summer. By normal Sundance standards, this amount of money going into a film is a huge commitment. Relativity may have decided on the large sum in order to create a solid relationship with JGL. It can be viewed as a long-term investment in the rising star.
Said Gordon-Levitt in a press release, “I always intended this to be a movie for a mass popular audience. Everyone told me it was a long shot. Now Relativity is making it happen. Tucker and Robbie told me they believe that, more than anything, audiences want something unique. I couldn’t agree with them more. I admire them for putting their money where their mouth is. And I couldn’t possibly be more grateful.”
Don Jon’s Addiction stars Gordon-Levitt, Scarlett Johansson, Julianne Moore, and Tony Danza. It follows the journey of a contemporary, porn-addicted Don Juan-type as he attempts to become less selfish. JGL spoke to us about the film in September when he described the project as “the hardest thing I’ve ever done.”
The actor/video released this update on YouTube where he looks adorable and shared his excitement:
Those who saw Don Jon’s Addiction at Sundance had high praise for the film, which is what led to its acquisition by Relativity.
