The first stunning trailer for Oldboy director Park Chan-wook’s Stoker, starring Mia Wasikowska and Nicole Kidman, has been released.
Just from skimming the trailer at no volume it’s clear this film looks absolutely stunning. Oldboy is definitely a visually stimulating film, but this looks like it has the potential to be chilling, breathtaking experience on a whole other level.
In addition to Wasikowska and Kidman, the film stars Oscar-nominee Jacki Weaver (Animal Kingdom), Matthew Goode (Watchmen) and Dermot Mulroney (The Grey). Take a look at the trailer below, via Apple.
The synopsis of the film reads:
“India Stoker (Mia Wasikowska) was not prepared to lose her father and best friend Richard (Dermot Mulroney) in a tragic auto accident. The solitude of her woodsy family estate, the peace of her tranquil town, and the unspoken somberness of her home life are suddenly upended by not only this mysterious accident, but by the sudden arrival of her Uncle Charlie (Matthew Goode), whom she never knew existed. When Charlie moves in with her and her emotionally unstable mother Evie (Nicole Kidman), India thinks the void left by her father’s death is finally being filled by his closet bloodline. Soon after his arrival, India comes to suspect that this mysterious, charming man has ulterior motives. Yet instead of feeling outrage or horror, this friendless young woman becomes increasingly infatuated with him.”

Working again with Oldboy cinematographer Chung-hoon Chung, Chan-wook has captured some truly amazing visuals that are equally frightening and captivating. It will be interesting to see whether the story can stay up to par, but this first look is clearly a step in the right direction.
Fox Searchlight has set Stoker for a March 1, 2013 release.
