Valve has announced its distribution platform for games will soon be carrying other software starting in September.
The company announced the news earlier today on the Steam news page.
While specific software has not been outlined for the launch, Valve has said many will include Steamworks functionality, allowing for automatic updating and cloud storage, among other things.
“The 40 million gamers frequenting Steam are interested in more than playing games,” said Mark Richardson of Valve. “They have told us they would like to have more of their software on Steam, so this expansion is in response to those customer requests.”
The program will officially launch September 5. Software titles will continue to release after the initial launch and Valve is encouraging developers to take advantage of Steam Greenlight, the company’s crowd-sourced approval system.
Valve recently launched the Source Filmmaker, a program that allows users to easily create in-game movies.
