After years of rumors and wishful thinking from fans, Ridley Scott is finally following up his celebrated 1982 science fiction classic, Blade Runner.
Alcon Entertainment has confirmed that Ridley Scott has been hired to produce and direct Blade Runner 2. Though there is currently a 2 in the title, the new Blade Runner will reportedly be a stand alone film with new characters set in the same world as the original. The film is described as “wholly original from the first Blade Runner.” There is no word yet if the film will take place before or after the events of the first film.
In regards to Harrison Ford returning for the 2nd film, Alcon producer Andrew Kosove had this to say:
In no way do I speak for Ridley Scott, but if you’re asking me will this movie have anything to do with Harrison Ford, the answer is no. This is a total reinvention, and in my mind that means doing everything fresh, including casting.
Unfortunately, Alcon producers also said we wouldn’t see the film until, at the earliest, 2014. That’s a long ways away.
