The Lucifer season 2 premiere highlighted the importance of faith, and it has me wondering if the good detective will ever realize she’s in the Devil’s company.
Chloe Decker is an intelligent and dedicated cop, but she’s also a realist. She likes hard facts and logical conclusions. Then again, there comes a point when you have all the facts, and despite the bizarre conclusion, you just have to accept it to be true when the evidence is staring you in the face.
When you have eliminated the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth.
It was surprising to me last year, then, that she never came to the conclusion Lucifer is the person he says he is. I was hoping that by the end of season 1, Chloe would stop questioning Lucifer’s abilities and strange quirks and just accept he’s the Devil.
You’d think seeing him bleed out and come back to life would sort of end that discussion.
Turns out, Lucifer has a pretty good reason for having Chloe deny and question her new friend’s identity. It all comes down to faith.
In the premiere, Chloe reveals she has a sample of Lucifer’s blood that she’s going to put through the system so she can finally figure out who he really is. This information will be based in fact and science instead of charm and performance, which are two of Lucifer’s defining qualities.
At this point, I was rejoicing. Chloe would finally know Lucifer’s divine origins and we could get past the too long drawn out plot of her never believing what he had to say and him always trying to prove to her who he is. It got old pretty fast.
Then Lucifer threw a wrench in that plan. Amenadiel says humanity can’t have proof of divinity, which actually makes a lot of sense. The whole system of religion and faith would kind of fall apart at that point, wouldn’t it? And it isn’t until Chloe speaks to the new medical examiner, Ella Lopez, that the bigger picture comes into play.
Chloe and Lucifer’s relationship is based on faith. As Chloe explains later with a cute story about a chicken and some eggs, she doesn’t actually need to know who Lucifer really is. It doesn’t matter to her because at the end of the day, he still gets the job done.
She knows that Lucifer is a bit strange, but that’s also one of the reasons why she likes him. He’s frustrating and stubborn and rebellious, but he’s also charming and kind and righteous.
The detective doesn’t see it as faith in divinity; she sees it has faith in a friendship. She actively chooses to believe her friend and trust in him when she throws that sample of his blood in the garbage.
I have to say, part of me is annoyed. I want Chloe to know who Lucifer is, and I don’t want this plot point to be held over their heads for another season or more.
On the other hand, it’s a wonderful gesture. It also shows how far both of these characters have come over the course of season 1. Chloe doesn’t need hard evidence and Lucifer doesn’t need to show off. They’re perfectly happy going with the flow — to an extent. A leopard can’t change its spots and all that.
Amenadiel will certainly be happy with this arrangement, but it’ll be interesting to see if everyone else is along for the ride. Will Ella or Detective Douche accidentally come across the sample of blood in Chloe’s garbage? They may run it as a favor, taking the faith aspect out of Chloe’s hands entirely.
There are also other divine pieces moving around the board, including Maze, Lucifer’s mother, and a brother we have yet to meet. One of them could definitely have their own agenda, and if the plan is to make Chloe mistrust Lucifer, telling her exactly who he is and what he’s capable of would certainly do the trick.
