Casting news for Once Upon a Time in Wonderland keeps pouring in, and this time we’ve learned that Cora may be back!
Yesterday we got news that Emma Rigby would be donning red as she picks up the mantel of the Red Queen in the Once Upon a Time spin-off series that will be set in Wonderland.
Now we’ve also learned, via TV Line, that the Queen of Hearts may be back, with Barbara Hershey once again filling the role as Cora, who became the Queen of Hearts after Rumpelstiltskin and Regina pushed her through a mirror and into the enchanted world of Wonderland.
Cora is now, of course, no longer a threat in Storybrooke or the Enchanted forest after Snow White cursed her heart and tricked Regina into putting it back inside her, essentially causing Regina to murder her own mother.
Cora has always been an enigmatic villain for the series, and while it’s too bad that we won’t ever get to see what she’d be like with her heart in place, it would be a nice throwback to Once Upon a Time if the spin-off got a chance to explore more of Cora’s story while she was trapped in Wonderland.
Hershey’s return as Cora isn’t set in stone. ABC has not picked up Once Upon a Time in Wonderland for a full season just yet. Instead, it’s going to be a four scene “presentation” that will air during the Once Upon a Time winter hiatus later this year. Shooting for the spin-off is set to begin this weekend, on April 7, in Vancouver.
Interestingly, it looks like Once Upon a Time in Wonderland will act much like the original show in that we’ll see both pre- and post-curse Wonderland, with flashbacks intermingled throughout.
Recent additions to Once Upon a Time in Wonderland include Sophie Lowe as Alice and Peter Gadiot as Cyrus, Alice’s love interest. We’ve also previously learned that Michael Socha will play the Knave of Hearts.
