The first actor has been cast in Once Upon a Time‘s upcoming Wonderland spinoff series: Michael Socha will play the Knave.
Once Upon a Time creators Adam Horowitz and Ed Kitsis are currently developing a new pilot for ABC, which is based on Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland and will be set within the same universe as Once Upon a Time.
Deadline has learned that actor Michael Socha, best known for his role as Tom in Being Human, will be playing the character the Knave of Hearts, who appeared briefly in Lewis Carroll’s original novel.
In the story, The Knave is on trial for burglary before the King of Hearts, but Alice defends him, and he is eventually set free. In this series, he is described as, “A sardonic adventurer, a man of action, a loner and a heart-breaker.” Could he be a love interest for our main heroine?
Socha is the first actor cast in the project. The other two lead characters are Alice and a character called Amahl – an exotic and soulful optimist, who many are speculating may in fact be Aladdin.
Timeline-wise, the spinoff will also take place after Regina casts the curse over fairytale land, although we don’t yet know to what extend Wonderland has been affected by it.
When the news of this spinoff series first leaked, there was speculation that Sebastian Stan might reprise his role as the Mad Hatter to star in the show, or that perhaps the character would be recast for the series. But as of now, it doesn’t look like Jefferson will be appearing, except perhaps for brief guest spots.
The as of now unnamed Wonderland pilot is currently in production. If ABC approves of it, the first season will likely consist of 13 episodes, which will air in the gaps of Once Upon a Time‘s third season schedule.
