‘Secret Circle’ and ‘Ringer’ cancellation news sparks worldwide Twitter trends

The CW has cancelled The Secret Circle and Ringer, but the shows’ fans aren’t letting them go quietly.

In a heartbreaking gesture, fans have been tweeting about both Ringer and The Secret Circle, and both show titles trended worldwide following the announcement of their cancellation.

While both series were definitely in danger due to low ratings, they had strong fan followings, several dedicated fansites, and podcasts celebrating them. Fans have been voicing their feelings of frustration at their shows’ premature ends, and here are some of the tweets we have received via @Hypable and @SecretDiariesTV:

  I believe it has happened before (more recently with Arrested Development, don’t know the exact details of it, only that netflix is a part of it), but it’s quite rare.

  YES!!! buffy the vampire slayer was canclled on the WB before it became the CW wayyyy back when,….. and it was picked up by UPN for 2 more seasons before the series finale which btw was EPICC!!!!!!!!

Gutted!!! I enjoyed Ringer, but could see the cancellation coming… but as for Secret Circle… I am still in shock!! I was really invested in that show and not for a second did I think it was in danger of getting cancelled! what were they thinking? were the ratings that bad?   I know right! Ringer was way more fun than 90210, lets face it, Ringer was the most hilarious drama of the whole season! As for The Secret Circle… I think that they wasted so much potential in this first season, but its cancelation was a surprise nonetheless. Sadly, I don’t think that both shows gonna get picked by someother channel, although Ringer would be just perfect for Lifetime or Televisa, hehe

I can’t believe this. Those were the only two shows, besides Supernatural, that I actually enjoyed on that network. The CW is becoming a little too much like FOX for my taste with the canceling of good shows too early.

I’d heard the show wasn’t doing so well (TSC) so I’m not that surprised, but I’m more sad that one of LJ Smith’s novel turned shows got cut (I’m a big fan of her books). This majorly sucks, I was a major fan of Ringer, and I was just getting in to the Secret Circle after hearing of its popularity and seeing news about it on here! CW sucks! Now we’ll never know what happened with either of them. I wish another channel would pick them up!

Im seriously depressed… As a lover of the Secret Circle books and a lover of the show the CW didnt give the show a chance. Hell, no one was going “fanboy/fangirl” crazy by The Vampire Diaries during season1 and the way The Secret Circle finale ended was beyond awesome even more so than The Vampire Diaries … i dont understand television anymore. No station gives shows a chance to grow into their own. There’s so many out lets now how we can watch these shows and the other ways don’t count it seems and the TV networks only stick to tv ratings only not the other ways we can see them.

      Networks pay attention to all the ratings, but the rating that they pay the most attention to is the Nielson Ratings, where selected families keep journals for a few weeks about what they watch, and send it in. Ratings are based off of this, sponsors look at these ratings to decide what shows to buy time slots for. If sponsors don’t buy time slots, the show gets cancelled. To do otherwise is bad business.
      
      The “breaks” that so many people are complaining about being the downfall of TSC, are actually planned around these Nielson rating months, called swing months. They save their better episodes for these months, often taking breaks to position their episodes at these times. Sometimes they’ll take breaks at a cliff-hanger to get viewer interest up and start up some gossip about the show.

To put it mildly, I am effing fuming!!!! I loved TSC and it left on such a cliffhanger seeing the 4 other children, aaargh, I want to see more of them, don’t think the CW know what they are doing, surely TSC is the perfect partner for TVD, I hope another network picks it up!

I cant believe the Secret Circle got cancelled and shows like 90210 get to stay! Blasphemy. The Secret Circle’s second half of the season has been phenomenal and was just starting to really develop. I don’t watch Ringer but because people are just as pissed about it being cancelled as The Secret Circle, i’m gonna say that it didn’t deserve cancellation either. The CW needs to realize that okay maybe the ratings aren’t all that but these shows have a awesomely strong fan bases and that can be way more important to a show than the number of people that watch it. Oh CW, you have some ‘splaynin to do.

  Not everyone likes the same shows. I like 90210, and several other shows on the CW. But what’s important here is the cancellation of The Secret Circle, not bagging on a show you don’t like. I don’t like the ringer, but I feel for it’s fans too as they are in the same boat as us.
  
  I think their rating system is flawed. I am in Canada, I get the CW shows through a Canadian network, are we counted in their ratings. Sometimes I watch it Thursdays at 7pm eastern, or 9 pm eastern or sometimes I can catch it at 11pm eastern time. Are all these counted. There are days for whatever reason I can’t watch Thursday so I instead watch it on Friday, is that counted towards their ratings?

The CW invests in FIVE new shows, three that are generic and dated at best yet don’t think enough of their viewers to order a second series of The Secret Circle who invested their time in it, it’s a tragedy. I’ll never watch another CW show after realizing what the network thinks of its fans.

  If networks based decisions solely on fans decisions, then we would have no more broadcast channels. Its not up to viewers to decide, it is commercial sponsors that decide. If sponsors refuse to pay what is needed for time slots around that show, its doomed. And obviously not enough viewers invested the time or sponsors would have invested more money.

    i highly doubt that’s the problem. The Secret Circle was bringing in way more viewers than Nikita or Hart of Dixie (2 mil vs 1.3 mil) each episode) and the other two both got picked back up). You would think more viewers = more interested in commercial sponsorships – especially when it was paired with Vampire Diaries.

    You are totally right in this. However, an issue that one has to bring up is why Nikita over TSC? I think the fan response (both US and International–which was an argument to keep Nikita) has proven that it may have sustained that 0.6 demo, where Nikita ended the season with a .4 and is bound to start next season with it. I don’t know if you’ve seen the Friday night line-up yet, but if you have, can you say that it’s not a bit pathetic? I hate using that word because it is so charged and negative and I don’t mean to attack the other shows with it. I’m just saying that it’s a total throw away night. Like the network just gave up. Fans of TSC are proving that they are loud and they would stick with this show. Why toss it out when it might add something and turn that throwaway night into a not-so-throwaway night?

Very angry at the CW for cancelling The Secret Circle and keeping Fart of Dixie. First of all, they kept giving The Secret Circle little breaks that was obviously the reason The Secret Circle died. The Secret Circle was the best show on the CW and fit their target demographic perfectly. I was one of the biggest CW fans with OTH and Supernatural, and now i am a H8R.   You can’t “cancel CW” from your plan, it is a broadcast channel, not a network channel, so its “free to air”. If your paying for it, thats just one more reason to feel bad for your decisions. Broadcast channels rely heavily on commercial sponsors for their shows, and the target demographic doesn’t spend money like older demographics, so it requires more ratings to equal the same revenue. And honestly, using terms like “fart of dixie” and “H8R”, shows too much immaturity for any channel to take you seriously

Well, I am just happy that they kept Nikita… I was preparing myself for a loss there. I am very disappointed to learn on Friday may 11th that the Secret Circle show has been cancelled!? The mix of sexy witches, love angles, witch hunters and magic made for a compelling show. We record the show and also on Thursday nights I watch it with my 14 year old son and 11 year old daughter. RENEW for season 2. The Vampire Diaries fans are emotionally invested into the show. Airing The Secret Circle RIGHT after the show is the reason why the ratings become low. Fans turn off the t.v to blog or twitter what they JUST watched and have too many emotions to concentrate on TSC. We love TSC just play it on a separate night!

THE STORY LINE FOR TSC WAS EXACTLY WHERE IT NEEDED TO BE TO GET FANS UP AND GOING FOR A SECOND SEASON. HAD THE CW GIVEN IT A SECOND SEASON THEY WOULD HAVE SEEN THE FAN BASE GROW. RIGHT NOW SUPERNATURAL SHOWS ARE IN. THE SECRET CIRCLE HAD SUCH A WIDE VARIETY FAN BASE THAT THE POTENTIAL FOR BETTER RATINGS WAS ALREADY THERE. My reaction is basically horrified i inspired my whole class to watch all episodes and they really liked it. So what exactly are they trying to tell us? THAT WE WASTED AN HOUR EVERY THURSDAY!? We watched something we loved and guess what? NO SECOND SEASON! Thanks so much for your consideration!

Not surprised Ringer got cancelled, the show was entirely driven by Sarah Michelle Geller. The secret Circle to me had all the criteria for a potentially successful show, I think it just needed more time to catch steam. Some shows just need some time

Here’s the thing, I’m 60yr. male who has a great regard for Magick and the Secret Circle. I was very upset when I read that Secret Circle was cancelled. The only thing I could reason that Extremist Christians who hate Magick must have put a strangle hold on the CW and squeezed.

Supernatural, Nikita, vampire diaries and the secret circle are my favorite shows. I’ve watched all since they began and waited every week for Thursday and Friday nights. I think they should give ringer (which I don’t watch but looked good) and the secret circle another season at least to see if ratings go up. These shows obviously have strong fan bases so why not try again? I’ve signed every petition I could find to keep TSC on. One tree hills first season had terrible ratings and look at what that show became. I think after the national and international hype about canceling TSC it shows that the fan base is way larger then what the ratings say and maybe now that us fans know, we will ensure the ratings are up by whatever means necessary. PLEASE GIVE THE SECRET CIRCLE ANOTHER CHANCE!! We’ve gone out of our ways to prove our loyalty to this show! I promise CW, you won’t be let down if u give TSC another shot!

Well there taking supernatural and gossip girl away at the end of seasons…y not keep.the secret circle. I’m lost i want to know what hapens next but no they have to strip it away.
