Community, one of our favorite NBC half-hour comedies, may or may not be on the chopping block. One website compared the ratings of Community to other sitcoms on NBC, and … let’s just say … it didn’t go well.

TV By The Numbers, which collects ratings on a weekly basis, ranked the NBC shows in its Renew/Cancel Index. The result slammed both Community and NBC:

On ABC, CBS or FOX, the woefully rated Community would have been canceled, probably long ago. But on the primetime trainwreck that is NBC it’s on its third season. The network, plus the fact that after four season’s worth of episodes it can be sold into syndication (and co-producer Sony has shown it will slash the fees to achieve that for a sitcom), means that even with cringe worthy ratings, Community is no worse than a “toss up”, and is probably a bit better than that.

What is most confusing to us is whether this is good news in the guise of an insult or just bad news all around. Overall, the website predicted that it is a “toss up” on whether or not the show will be canceled by May 2012.

The site ranks all channels based on their respective numbers, hence the website’s name, and describe’s its ranking system this way:

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show’s new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It’s calculated by dividing a show’s new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show’s own network. The network’s average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

What are your thoughts on this ranking system? What are your thoughts on the show’s murky future? Will it make it to syndication?

Why is “live/same day” relevant in a day where DVR and TIVO rules amongst 18-49 demographic? I never watch a show live anymore (W, M, 39).

I agree with Gary. I hardly watch anything live anymore. I prefer to watch shows in my own time, in the order I feel like watching them.

I think Community is the best show NBC has on Thursday nights. It always gets me to laugh! “Whitney” is flat out unwatchable. “The Office” peaked two seasons ago. “Parks and Rec” is just ok. “Up All Night” is also just ok.

    NOOOOOOO I love this show

NO!! Save Community! It’s the best show on TV right now, I think.  I don’t understand why more people don’t watch it.

NO. “Six seasons and a movie!”

  • Travis

Community is one of my favorite shows.  I hope it doesn’t get cancelled.

Community is the best Thursday night comedy on NBC. How about canceling the office considering it has not been funny in years!!

NOOOOOOooooooooo!!!!! I would be devastated if they cancelled this show.

Also, they need a new ratings system if it indeed doesn’t count DVR. Maybe track scheduled series’ recordings? That would be a better measure for the extent of viewership, I would think.

community is the best show!!!!!!! it better not get cancelled. especially with all the doctor who references going on!!! the astronaut making paninis?!?!?! come on. that’s good stuff.

  • Erika

That is extremely confusing, I have no idea what to think. I really, really hope it doesn’t get the axe, though-I’d be devastated! It seems to me that Community has become more popular recently (for example, I just started watching it this season, due to the hype on tumblr), but maybe the problem is that a lot of people watch it online, as opposed to when it airs.

The idea that Community could get cancelled and Two Broke Girls or Whitney got picked up for a full season is ridiculous.  Community may not have the viewers that CSI brings in, but it has an incredibly loyal fan-base that will continue to watch and buy the DVDs.  VIVA GREENDALE!

  • Jazz

Community is the best show ever, IT CANNOT BE CANCELLED! I will flip. I love this show. NOOOOOO.

  • Peterkees

The fisrt season of community was good, the second is ok. The third however is bad, real bad. they should cancel it immediately, before it gets even worse!!!!

    • Chelsey

wrong. so wrong. someone obviously hasn’t seen Remedial Chaos Theory

  • Guest

NO. This show is comic genius. The only reasons for bad ratings is that some people don’t understand the references to the 80′s.

Community is one of the best and smartest shows out there.  It’s sad that people would rather watch “Keeping Up With the Kardashians” or “Real Housewives” than a show with great characters, amazing story lines, and different ideas than all the others.  I would be extremely sad if Community was canceled.
