These figures are even more impressive when you remember that Game of Thrones broke this record despite the leaks and hackers’ attempts to sabotage HBO’s success!

Across the season, Game of Thrones has averaged a total of 31 million viewers per episode. This is far and away HBO’s biggest hit ever, and speaks to the power that cable television can still have in a time when viewership is shifting online and traditional networks are struggling to keep even humble viewership counts for most of their shows.

Too bad there’s only one season left of Game of Thrones, right? Considering that an estimated 90% of U.S. HBO subscribers watch the series (via THR), it’s no wonder that HBO is pushing forward with several spinoffs and prequel series!

Game of Thrones season 8 will likely premiere in 2019.
