Xbox One, a new home entertainment console announced yesterday by Microsoft, has angered gamers in the news that pre-owned games may require a fee to play.

Xbox One, the highly anticipated new console from Microsoft is fearing a backlash from gamers over the news that pre-owned games may require a fee to play according to Larry Hryb, the director of programming for Microsoft.

Larry Hryb on the “confusion” surrounding Xbox One’s pre-owned games

“We know there is some confusion around used games on Xbox One and wanted to provide a bit of clarification on exactly what we’ve confirmed today. While there have been many potential scenarios discussed, today we have only confirmed that we designed Xbox One to enable our customers to trade in and resell games at retail.”

“Another piece of clarification around playing games at a friend’s house – should you choose to play your game at your friend’s house, there is no fee to play that game while you are signed in to your profile.”

Gamers will have to be signed in on the Xbox account that is registered to the specific game, and if the gamer was to be lend a game, a fee would be required to play it.

This is giving Microsoft a huge, lucrative hold on the retail market and will gain massively from it with revenues from the gaming division to soar through this announcement.

This news will inevitably prick the ears of Sony, who will want to get any gain on Microsoft and if Sony can engineer their new console, the Playstation 4, to allow pre-owned games to play without a fee, this could be a major coup for Sony.

The console war between Sony and Microsoft is truly alive and it appears as though Microsoft will need to get their community back on their side in order to convince gamers to buy the Xbox One, otherwise this could be one way traffic of sales with the Sony Playstation 4.

We expect more clarification from Microsoft in the lead up to E3 2013.

What do you think about the news regarding the Xbox One’s confusing pre-owned games scenario? Would you pay a fee for using an “old” game? And, is this making you consider buying the Playstation 4 over the Xbox One?

The Xbox One is rumoured to be released on November 30 with a price tag of $399/£399.

Update: The Microsoft disaster continues, as now XboxSupport Twitter account says that the charging of pre-owned games is “not correct“. Why can’t Microsoft work coherently with each other?

Update 2: Hryb has clarified the debate from his personal blog.

“We know there is some confusion around used games on Xbox One and wanted to provide a bit of clarification on exactly what we’ve confirmed today. While there have been many potential scenarios discussed, today we have only confirmed that we designed Xbox One to enable our customers to trade in and resell games at retail.”

“Beyond that, we have not confirmed any specific scenarios.”
