Fox has recently had some success with comic-based television shows, and they’ve now confirmed that they’re planning an X-Men TV show which could bring some of our favorite mutants to the small screen.

Fox entertainment chairman Gary Newman and Dana Walden recently reported that they are currently working on a television show which will be inspired by the X-Men comic books, including the incredibly popular films they’ve released over the last 15 years.

After the release of the network’s latest show, Gotham, based on the early life of Batman’s favorite detective, Fox is ready to bring some other comic properties to home viewers. The kicker is, while 20th Century Fox controls the film rights to X-Men characters, the comic is actually still owned by Marvel, which is owned by Disney.

Disney and Fox are rivals in the television network world, which could prove to be a problem now that Fox wants to put the X-Men on the small screen. To achieve an X-Men TV show, Fox would need Marvel to allow them to use the characters, which could take some time to work out a deal.

This has reportedly led to some difficult and interesting discussions between the two rival networks. Gary Newman says, “It’s in negotiations. We’re cautiously optimistic, we had a good meeting with them [Marvel]. That [X-Men] will not be on a fast track creatively. This is just the deal, now we have to find the creative.”

It seems like this may not be something to look for by the end of the year, like some of Marvel’s TV shows, but at least Fox is working with Marvel already in terms of receiving Marvel’s permission to use the X-Men characters on TV.

Newman says that there hasn’t been any work done in terms of writing or even ideas of which characters they would run with, but he believes the show could be ready before the 2016-2017 TV season.

Marvel may not like the idea of Fox competing with them in the comic book area on television, considering they have Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and their newly premiered show Agent Carter. They also have multiple Netflix shows which will be rolling out over the next two years including Daredevil, A.K.A. Jessica Jones, and Luke Cage.

This isn’t the first time we’ve heard about an X-Men TV spin-off, as X-Men: Days of Future Past writer Simon Kinberg revealed last year that an X-Men TV show is “inevitable,” but that they’re “still in this place of figuring out what the future of the franchise will be.”

He went on to note that Marvel has successfully linked Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. with Captain America: The Winter Soldier, and believes that Fox can do the same thing with an X-Men television show and its respective films.

We agree that it seems inevitable that an X-Men TV show will be seen within the next two years, we just hope that Fox and Disney/Marvel can figure out the details so that fans can enjoy some of their favorite mutants on the small screen.

Let us know which X-Men characters you would want to see in a TV series, and whether you think Marvel will let Fox use the characters despite being in competition with them with Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and Agent Carter.
