Newt Scamander’s Patronus has been kept a secret by J.K. Rowling, but the massive marketing machine behind The Crimes of Grindelwald might be cluing us in.

A Patronus is one of the most iconic magical elements within the Wizarding World. It dispels approaching Dementors, keeping the conjurer safe from the evil, soul-destroying effects. The Patronus was first introduced in Prisoner of Azkaban.

As of last year fans were able to discover their own Patronus on Pottermore. Naturally, fans have been wondering what a creature-loving wizard like Newt would have as a Patronus.

Rowling has been asked what Newt’s Patronus is on Twitter a few times, and she has declined to answer because she deems it a “big spoiler”:

What is Newt Scamander’s Patronus?

So, there’s a lot of Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald merchandise in the pipeline as Warner Brother Consumer Products takes advantage of fan fervor for the Wizarding World. One fan account has noticed the following pieces of merchandise depicting Newt and a Kelpie together:

On the mug we see Newt with his wand, and after a transition of wispiness we see the Kelpie. In another piece of official art, we see a Kelpie within a silhouette of Newt. Again, there’s a wispiness to it — not unlike what we see with Patronuses:

Why would this beast be so closely associated with Newt? There’s only one answer, and it’s that the Kelpie is Newt’s Patronus.

A Kelpie is a shape-shifting beast that lives within water. It is not to be approached by humans — unless they want to be eaten.

Newt documented the Kelpie in his hit book Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. “The world’s largest kelpie is found in Loch Ness, Scotland,” he wrote. “Its favourite form is that of a sea serpent. International Confederation of Wizard observers realised that they were not dealing with a true serpent when they saw it turn into an otter on the approach of a team of Muggle investigators and then transform back into a serpent when the coast was clear.”

Why does J.K. Rowling consider this a spoiler? Perhaps in The Crimes of Grindelwald, or another film in the five-part series, Newt will have to conjure his Patronus. Fans and characters will get to discover for the first time just what Newt’s Patronus is.

It seems likely that his protector will be introduced in Crimes of Grindelwald since this alleged-Patronus merchandise is arriving now. The movie hits theaters this November, with the third film in the series not due out until November 2020.

As Professor Lupin explained in Prisoner of Azkaban, a Patronus is “a kind of positive force, a projection of the very things that the Dementor feeds upon – hope, happiness, the desire to survive – but it cannot feel despair, as real humans can, so the Dementors can’t hurt it.” We can’t wait to see how Newt uses it in the Fantastic Beasts series!
