WarnerMedia, the parent company of HBO and Warner Brothers, is preparing to enter the streaming race. Today we’re learning how much we’ll have to pony up to enjoy their body of work.

The Wall Street Journal reports that the forthcoming service, expected to launch in early 2020, will be priced between $16 and $17 per month. While that may seem high, especially compared to Disney+’s $6.99 price point, the WSJ says that this subscription will include HBO and Cinemax.

On its own, a subscription to HBO Now currently costs $14.99 per month and includes all HBO originals and a healthy number of movies. A WarnerMedia streaming app coming in at only $2 or $3 more per month, with a plethora of additional content, doesn’t sound too terrible.

Still, asking people to shell out $16 or more per month for a single streaming app is asking a lot, and WarnerMedia may have to reconsider their pricing. They need to accept that Netflix, Hulu, Amazon, and Disney are driving the price of streaming libraries down, and consumers won’t be willing to pay more than the cost of a Netflix subscription.

That said, if they make a Game of Thrones, Harry Potter, or DC spinoff a WarnerMedia streaming exclusive, then they may have an easier time selling it.

WarnerMedia’s app will be the exclusive streaming home of several major film franchises, including Harry Potter/Fantastic Beasts, DC adaptations, and the LEGO movies. It’ll also offer the now completed Game of Thrones.

To compete with Netflix, Hulu, and other streamers, WarnerMedia has no choice but to launch their own original series and movies. And we’re already hearing about a couple of projects in development: For example, Ansel Elgort will star in a Tokyo Vice series. This writer is hoping that some sort of Harry Potter TV series is also secretly in development.
