Ethan was promoted to sheriff after killing Sheriff Pope, and his new position offered him new information about the citizens of Wayward Pines and their lives before arriving in the town. However, Ethan was distracted from doing much digging when realtor Peter McCall was brought in for painting subversive graffiti. Nurse Pam demanded a reckoning because this was his third strike, but Ethan refused.
Meanwhile, Ben enrolled in Wayward Pines Academy and met Megan Fisher, a hypnotherapist-turned-teacher who seemed interested in confusing Ben and shaking his trust in his parents. According to the mayor, The Powers That Be are most interested in the children of the town and shaping their minds — in what way is unclear, however.
When Ethan prepared to hide Peter from the demanded reckoning, Peter brought him to the fence and pointed out a cliff face that was the only way past the fence. When Ethan refused to kill him, Peter told him to earn the trust of the town and threw himself into the fence, thus completing the reckoning.
While Theresa was hired to fill Peter’s spot as a realtor, Ethan decided to scale the cliff and go for help. With Ethan’s exit, Pam took on the position of sheriff.
